Type the words "Filipino,’’ "ICT,’’ "computers,’’ on the Google search engine and an advertisement for the Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) project will automatically appear on the right hand side of your computer screen.
GILAS, a multi-sector effort to promote information literacy among high school students in the Philippines, is a recent beneficiary of Google Grants, which offers free advertising space to selected non-profits on Google.com for a period of at least 90 days. Google Grants provides in-kind keyword advertising to help non-profits attract a specific target market.
GILAS hopes to achieve its goal of information literacy by connecting all of the Philippines’ 5,500 public high schools to the Intenet by 2010. To date, GILAS has helped to connect over 700 public high schools nationwide.
With Google’s help, GILAS hopes to generate greater public awareness of and support for its efforts by directing more traffic towards the GILAS website (www.gilas.org). Google.com is currently one of the five most popular sites on the Internet and is used by millions of people around the world.
