CAN THE University of the East Warriors end their long title drought?
With the way they are trampling their rivals, the Warriors appear confident and ready to recapture their once lofty standing in the UAAP.
For starter, the Warriors, who produced the likes of Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Jerry Codiñera and James Yap, ruled the 2nd Home and Away Invitational League Sunday by drubbing San Beda College, 93-76, at the UE Gym.
The Warriors, who lost their first two games in the only existing collegiate home-and-away basketball league, completed their domination of the event by outgunning the Red Lions in the final two quarters.
Custodio, who was later named the Most Valuable Player of the league, led the Warriors with 26 points, in a performance he highlighted with several spectacular plays. Borboran added 15 while Espiritu had 13 and James Martinez, a former San Beda junior player, chipped in 11.
San Beda’s top gun Riego Gamalinda was limited to eight points and Ogie Menor only had five to show. Nigerian Samuel Ekwe scored 26 to lead the Red Lions.
Meanwhile, Far Eastern University downed University of Sto. Tomas, 73-65, to bag the women’s crown. Later, Kathrina Nido of FEU was voted MVP.
In the two side events before the championship match, Ateneo de Manila, which lost in the knockout semis against UE, took twin honors in the 3-point shootout and in the slamdunk competition.
Ateneo guard Jai Reyes topped the 3-point shootout with a total of 14 points, while beanpole Japeth Aguilar scored a pair of perfect 30s to rule the slamdunk contest. —Eddie ALINEA
