Will a snap presidential election save the country from its current political crisis?
President Gloria Arroyo has said that her government is one step ahead of the enemies of the state. This comes after the Armed Forces of the Philippines had quelled the threats of military adventurism fuelled by persistent questions on the legitimacy of her assumption to office and subsequent calls for her to step down which continue to hound her administration and set back the country's economic gains.

2 cargo vessels collide near Cebu harbor; all 22 crewmen rescued
A cargo ship sank after it collided with another cargo vessel at the entrance of Cebu harbor Saturday, but no casualty was reported.

President Arroyo yesterday ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to deal with lingering threats posed by some quarters who seek to overthrow her government.
The President issued the directive as she warned that she would not hesitate to "sternly enforce the rule of law in the streets" despite having lifted the state of national emergency she had previously promulgated to quell the alleged rebellion last Feb. 24.
