Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco led the celebration of Linggo ng mga Mangingisda (Fishermen’s Week) which started yesterday.
This year’s celebration has for its theme, "Mangingisda ng Bayan, Kabalikat sa Kaunlaran…Mga Bayani ng Pangisdaan, Hatid ay Kasaganahan." The town’s fishermen’s groups are expected to take part in the festivities.
Yesterday, the celebration started with a mass. It was followed by a motorcade.
Today, a pagoda and fluvial mass will be held. There will also be a banca race at the Centennial Park on March 17; tribute to fishermen, March 20;
Tiangco said that the celebration is aimed at highlighting Navotas as the country’s fishing capital.
Councilor Jack Santiago, the chairman of the Sangguniang Bayan’s committee on fisheries, is supervising the festivities in coordination with the Navotas Agriculture Office and other local government agencies.
"The celebration of Linggo ng mga Magingisda is Navotas’ way of paying tribute to the fishermen, whom we look upon as heroes," Mayor Tiangco said. "It also celebrates the heritage of Navotas, which began as a fishing town." (Ed Mahilum)
