In recognition of the extraordinary importance of English as the language of multinational and multicultural communication, Mapua Institute of Technology recently established the Mapua English Language Center (ELC).
This move has made Mapua the first technological institution in the country to ever pursue progressive language learning for its faculty, staff, and students.
The Mapua ELC is on top of curricular reforms in the Institute’s English program, which was designed in collaboration with its foreign curriculum consultants. Mapua now offers English courses using new materials and methods proven effective in second language learning.
These new curricular programs are made even more significant with the implementation of the Mapua English Language Test (MELT), an assessment system that measures entry, mid-course, and exit levels of English learners, and provides insights into program impact. Developed by foreign experts, the MELT is comparable with international language test scales.
English language consciousness and proficiency development also give added character to Mapua’s faculty and staff training. A series of seminar-workshops are lined up in keeping with the institute-wide Mapua English Proficiency Program. Similar programs are offered to other members of the Yuchengco Group of Companies as well as to a growing external clientele.
This same program and system guides Mapua’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, which is currently running for foreign learners of the Institute’s Korean partner. The ESL Program of the Institute presents an avenue for the foreign learners to also experience the Mapua learning ambience. Some of them have made plans to pursue IT education also at Mapua.
