Konstructura Asya: International Exposition of the Asia-Pacific Construction Industry
THE Asia-Pacific construction industry has the craft skills, professional expertise, and capacity to deliver the hospitals, schools, homes, workplaces, and transport infrastructures the people of the region need. The significance of the region’s construction industry to the region’s economy is clear to see – its annual output runs into trillions of dollars, covers a big portion of the Gross Domestic Product, and gives employment to tens of millions in construction related activities. The public sector is its single biggest client which has helped to sustain growth in the building sector.

Middle class indifference
SENATOR Joker Arroyo was quite right to complain about the indifference of the middle class to violations of civil and political liberties. Several journalists also deplore the palpable lack of concern for press freedom.

OFWs as investors
HEALTHY Filipinos living abroad would have invested .4 billion here to create 1.6 million jobs but were discouraged by "poor governance.’’

Congressional Award for Speaker Kim Won-Ki
(Following is the text of the Congressional Medal of Achievement which Speaker of the House of representatives Jose de Venecia Jr. presented last night to Speaker Kim Won-Ki of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea)

Day of the 1848 Revolution in Hungary
THE 1788 French Revolution changed Europe forever, with its ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. It marked the end of absolute monarchy and the reign of liberalism in the European continent. Napoleon Bonaparte’s occupation of Spain led the Spaniards to launch their War of Independence (Guerra de la Independencia) from 1808 to 1813. The 1812 Cadiz Constitution was the legacy of this war.

A Taliban at Yale
JUST when the world thought that violent Taliban days were over, the terrorist group comes back to shake the newly established Afghan government and spread terror again. Only last Saturday (March 11, 2006), more than 140 militants and five soldiers were killed in clashes in the Waziristan border when Taliban attackers marred the area with terror highlighted by the other day’s ambush of the country’s leader. Qatar’s leading English daily newspaper The Peninsula reports (March 9, 2006): "Afghanistan is facing an increasingly vicious insurgency by Taleban guerrillas, who have been fighting since their regime was ousted weeks after the September 11 attacks when Pakistan dropped support for the radical Islamists.’’

A bishop’s inspiring project
HERE’S good news.

The request of James and John
AS Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve [disciples] aside by themselves...

Hooded witness
NEWS reports have been printed about an unidentified security officer who purportedly caught on digital video camera an alleged break-in in one of the rooms where questioned ballot boxes containing votes for the President and others were stored in the House under watch of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force. Also, the videotape catching six House civilian employees barging into the South Wing of the Batasan Complex, where they stole election returns from 38 provinces, and replaced them with fake and tampered ones. Such reports should not be given credence even if the video tape is proven authentic unless those six employees and PNP watchers are investigated and charged together with the coup plotters.

Smoking is dangerous to your health
SMOKING is a leading preventable cause of death all over the world. If you are a regular smoker, you are probably losing about 5 ½ minutes of life expectancy for each cigarette you smoke. Cigarette smoking is a major cause of lung cancer. Yet, despite the vast medical evidence supporting such statistics, most heavy smokers continue to smoke.

Media freedom under siege (2)
IN its survey of press freedom in 2005, Freedom House gave the Philippines a freedom index of 35, meaning it is "partly free." Factors taken into consideration are the legal environment (6), the political environment (19), and the economic environment (10). This is not too bad considering that we have countries like Cuba and North Korea which are in the 90’s or "not free" category, or Malaysia and Singapore which are also considered "not free."
