The Makati city government has started issuing fool-proof identification cards to jeepneys plying various routes in the city.
"It is the first step to identify the jeepneys and put a stop to the operation of colorum and out-of-line vehicles in the country’s financial capital," officials said.
The issuance of the IDs is part of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) with the Makati Jeepney Operators and Drivers Alliance (MJODA).
Mayor Jejomar Binay ordered the issuance of the IDs following complaints by drivers on the operation of colorum jeepneys in the city.
The IDs are being issued by the DPS headed by Director Hermenegildo San Miguel. They would initially benefit members of 25 jeepney zone associations in the city affiliated with MJODA, which is headed by Orlando Marquez.
The MOA also mandates the city government through the DPS to implement the Route Sticker requirement based on confirmations furnished by the LTFRB and the recommendations of MJODA.
It also cites the need to put a stop to the operation of illegal vehicles which have prejudiced not only legitimate jeepney operators but also the interests of the national and city governments since colorum vehicle owners don’t pay the appropriate taxes.
