A caring school in continuing pursuit for quality and excellence

The Our Lady of Perpetual Succor School (OLOPSS) opened in 1978 as a one-room day care center along Bayanbayanan Avenue in Concepcion, Marikina. It was founded by a husband-and-wife team of Dionisio Alonzo Salvador, Sr. and Carmen Caday Salvador from Laoag, Ilocos Norte. It was in response to the need for more schools in Marikina, which was then one of the choice locations for many expectant homeowners.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

From a small group of 50 toddlers, its enrollment increased, resulting to its conversion to a preschool and then to a grade school. By 1985, the school was already operating all levels of basic education under full government recognition.

In 1986, OLOPSS moved to its present and permanent campus in Gen. Ordonez Street, a 1.3- hectare lot that crossed boundaries, to cover a whole stretch of 3.5 hectares from which sprung structures and facilities that are epitomes of architectural grandeur and craftsmanship.

The dynamic leadership of the founders, the passion of the school leaders to make a difference in the service that they render, and the unwavering support of the employees all made possible the continuous updating and upgrading of its programs, facilities and infrastructures to meet the needs of its growing number of stakeholders. All these and more are reasons enough for OLOPSC to rise from its humble beginnings as a small day care center to become one of Marikina’s – even Metro Manila’s – biggest and finest private schools.

Side by side with its structural expansion, the school has also become more competitive in the academic forefront. Proofs of its institutional competitiveness are the results of past government exams like the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) / National Secondary Aptitude Test (NSAT) and the National Elementary Achievement Test (NEAT), the impressive performance of its students in academic and non-academic competitions, the increasing number of its graduates gaining admission in premier colleges and universities, and countless alumni who are not only gainfully employed but have established themselves in their chosen professions.

In 1995, OLOPSS opened its tertiary level and assumed a new name – Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPSC). The opening of its college department came as an answer to the needs of would-be college students from Marikina and its neighboring suburbs in search for an affordable quality college education and likewise save on travel time and cost. The department has, by now, attained government recognition and is on its way to accreditation.

In 2003, the school celebrated its Silver Jubilee. With its physical plant and facilities ideally in place, an enrollment more than adequate to make it viable, and with a workforce in all levels moving on in coordinated efforts towards its vision, School Year 2003-2004 became a yearlong thanksgiving celebration made significant through the realignment of the school's vision, programs and activities, the freezing of tuition fees for a year, and the implementation of additional benefits for its workforce.

This year, 2005, marked the demise of its founding president. The school mourned and still mourns the loss of a great man whose vision of OLOPSC crossed generations to fulfill the dreams of thousands of students and employees under its roof.

PRESENT TIMES

Now on its 28th year, OLOPSC is blessed with a student population of 4,592 and a workforce of 242 employees .

Having all levels of education on a campus conveniently located along transportation lines, OLOPSC is an ideal one-stop shop for students in search of affordable quality education. The curriculum for each level is continuously assessed and reassessed to insure its relevance to the needs of the times.

The school takes pride in its overall cleanliness and an ambience described as child-friendly, safe, conducive for learning, and a caring home for its learners. It is a complete school in itself. Its structures and facilities include a beautiful chapel, a Speech Laboratory, an audio-visual room, an automated college library, library satellites for each department, two school clinics, modestly equipped laboratories for Computer Education, Science and Home Economics classes, a Montessori Laboratory for Preschool, air-conditioned classrooms from preschool to high school, two canteens, a spacious gym and an open court. In matters of safety and security, stringent measures and adequate security personnel are in place to insure that the school is a safe haven for all members of the school community.

Among the school’s current thrusts is to continue enhancing academic achievement and customer service through a non-stop employee development program. At this time, the school is on a high gear towards developing a higher level of English proficiency among teachers, students and non-teaching personnel to make them confident in using the language in day-to-day communications in the workplace. With an ongoing English campaign drive supported by a formal training program under a specialized group of trainers, the school hopes to achieve its language goal.

Values development is another thrust, considering the obvious values disorientation that has insidiously crept into the Philippine society. In October 2005, the school launched an Intensified Values Formation Program. Integration of values in classroom activities, circulation of values formative materials, follow-through activities, masses and regular weekly prayer services are done in support of this program. It is not an easy ride but there is no point in giving up because there is no one with as much power as the school to build people into the individuals they are wanted to become.

OLOPS College now proudly stands as one of the educational landmarks in the community today. At 28, the school hopes to remain steadfast in its commitment to mold the students with the traditional culture of excellence in academics, character formation and in all areas of its services as it journeys for the gold and beyond.
