THE REBIRTH of Philippine boxing’s golden era got another shot in the arm yesterday after two major personalities in the world of boxing arrived in the country.

Golden Boy Promotion officials’ Eric Gomez and Sampson Lewkowicz are now in Cebu, hoping to recruit young talents whom they will promote in the United States.

The duo arrived yesterday from Las Vegas via Cathay Pacific and are currently staying at the Waterfront Hotel backed by their Filipino counterparts Sammy Gello-ani and Tony Aldeguer.

"This is their first time here and they like what they are seeing. Now they know that our country is truly peaceful and safe" said Gello-ani in a long distance interview with the Bulletin.

Gello-ani admitted that they had a hard time convincing the two to come over and see for themselves not only the potentials of our boxers but the beauty of the country.

Gomez and Lewkowicz are also in town to watch Saturday night’s 12-round Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federatation (OPBF) vacant title fight between Cebuano stylist Z Gorres and Thai challenger Waenpetch Chuwatana.

Golden Boy Promotions is fledgling outfit owned by boxing superstar Oscar "Golden Boy" Dela Hoya.

Dela Hoya’s group and Top Rank Inc., owned by the influential Bob Arum, are hot on the trails of Filipino fighters after the success of Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.

Filipino fans are fast turning out to be a major market in the boxing business after a mammoth crowd showed up during Pacquiao’s monumental win over Morales last January in Las Vegas.

The recent event is now setting off a wild chase for several international boxing promoters to tap Filipino fighters as major players for their boxing cards.

Meanwhile, Gorres’ foe will be banking on his vast championship experience, having fought six OPBF title brawls and winning three of these fights.

Big plans are in store for the soft spoken Cebuano when he hurdles his Thai counterpart Chuwatana in what is expected to be exciting and explosive matchup.

A strong international and star-studded supporting cast is expected to draw the most descriminating boxing fans to watch another bloodbath promotion of Gello-ani with two other Thai fighter Decho and Dechapol Bankluaygym collide with WBO Asia-Pacific Champion Czar Amonsot and undefeated A.J. Banal, respectively.
