Nokia predicts mobile TV to take off in Asia Pacific in 3rd qtr

By Joel D. Pinaroc

Handset leader Nokia predicted that TV services beamed directly to the mobile phones of subscribers will take off in the Asia Pacific region in the third quarter of this year.

The converged services of mobile TV, however, will need regulatory and infrastructure requirements, Mauro Montanaro, vice president of customer and market operations for Nokia in Asia, in a press conference said.

"For countries wanting to roll out mobile TV, issues like policies, regulations, and infrastructure, need to be answered," Montanaro said.

The executive also said there are already a few Asian countries on the verge of rolling out the technology, which is seen as a new revenue stream that telecommunications carriers, and broadcasting firms, can leverage on. The executive cited Malaysia, which is currently preparing to rollout mobile TV on a commercial basis.

"The rollout for mobile TV, particularly in markets like Malaysia, can be easy. One reason is that major cable companies offering pay TV are set to use the same standard that carriers and broadcasters will use for mobile TV services," Montanaro said.

One of the more popular standards for mobile TV is digital video broadcastinghandheld (DVB-H), which Nokia, and other technology giants are supporting including Microsoft, Intel, Motorola and Texas Instruments, among others. DVB-H essentially allows carriers to deliver digital TV signals over the air directly to DVB-H-capable handsets and devices.

Montanaro further said Malaysian operators are also likely to offer mobile TV services on a pay-perview scheme, much like what cable providers in the country are currently doing.

The pay-per-view scheme is also gaining support from operators in "mature" markets for advanced mobile services such as the European Union and South Korea.

The Philippines meanwhile remains a lucrative market for advance mobile services, because of the immense popularity of television and the sheer number of mobile phone subscribers in the country which industry estimates put to almost 30 million users.
