MATTEO GUIDICELLI of the Cebu Racing Group returned to action yesterday at the start of the 2006 Shell Helix Superkarting Series at the Carmona Circuit Philippines.
The return came in the wake of last year’s championship round that ended in a controversy that had Guidicelli alleging he was denied of equal chances for the crown with the unfair decisions of race officials in the final race.
Disheartened, the 15-year-old Matteo and his father Gianluca contemplated on giving up karting and explore other disciplines of motorsports.
But in a talk brokered by Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) Chairman and revered veteran racer Mandy Eduque, the Guidicelli family and Shell Helix Superkarting Series organizer Johnny Tan patched things up .
Tan explained to the Guidicellis that he was also saddened by the controversial climax, saying it was beyond his control as organizer, and "it was the call of race officials."
Eduque, prodded by Alessandra Team Director Gerard Madrigal to convince Matteo’s return, related incidents of similar nature in the past and cited lessons learned from these circumstances. The veteran rallye driver assured that he will see to it that rules will be implemented "fair and square" this season as he’ll try to watch the races as much as he possibly can.
"We’re very happy that Mr. Eduque brokered this meeting to patch up everything. Of course, we’re very much happy to welcome him (Guidicelli) back to the fold," said Tan.
"You know, Matteo is such a great talent and there’s so much ahead of him, and it would be such a waste to just let a great talent go. Rest assured, we’ll make sure that he’ll be given fair treatment," said Eduque.
The AAP chairman further vowed that he will install more race stewards to make sure that all rules will be implemented unbiased not just to Guidicelli but to all the participants as well.
Moved by Eduque’s words, Matteo and Gianluca agreed to join the kickoff leg as part of the Alessandra Racing Team.
"This is for the love of the sport. Honestly, I missed karting and it feels good to come back to the one you love. Chairman Eduque proved himself a great racing champion for his compelling wisdom that convinced us to continue my karting career," said Matteo who’s backed up by Animax, Pepsi, Penshoppe, Addict MobileAMP, Swatch and Oakley.
"I also would like to express my appreciation to Gerard Madrigal who was always supportive of me when things got really bad last year, and for this reason, I’m really excited to work more closely with him by joining forces with the team."
"We’re very elated indeed that situations turned better now after the mediation of Chairman Eduque who has that same passion for motorsports that also compelled our hearts to make a "return" to this series," added Gianluca.
