AFTER OPENING the first quarter of 2006 with a bang, Philippine boxing is now primed to unleash its second quarter salvo as several Filipino fighters are lined-up for meaningful bouts abroad.
Leading the charge is World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight mandatory challenger Rodel Mayol.
The 24-year-old Mayol gets his much-awaited title crack on May 6 against defending WBC world champion Eagle Kyowa of Japan.
The undefeated Mayol, with a record of 22-0, with 17 KO’s, will be fighting behind enemy lines as the 12-round title bout will happen in the champion’s sod, the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
After a week, attention shifts back to the country as former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) superfeatherweight champion Randy Suico aims for his second Oriental crown in Cebu.
The 25-year-old Suico (241, 21 KO’s), who vacated his superfeatherweight crown recently, vies for the vacant OPBF lightweight belt versus top Thai challenger Kongtoranee Por Surasak in a 12-round title bout on May 13.
International promoter Wakee Salud, in bankrolling the Suico-Surasak bout, will assemble topnotch undercards and plans to hold the boxingfest at the posh Waterfront Hotel.
Former OPBF superbantamweight boss Jimrex Jaca, fresh from his successful US debut beneath the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales rematch, goes for the vacant OPBF 130-lb crown on May 20.
The 22-year-old Jaca, who stopped Mexican Geronimo Hernandez in one round last January in Las Vegas, will now battle Nobuhito Honmo of Japan in a 12-round title fight that will also be held in Korakuen Hall.
Serving as the supporting main event of the JacaHonmo brawl is another Filipino bet, ex-World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight king Malcolm Tuñacao.
The 27-year-old southpaw Tuñacao (19-1-3, 13 KO’s) defends his OPBF bantamweight tiara versus Japanese challenger Yasuo Kijima.
Also on May 20 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, ALA Boys Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista and Z Gorres make their debut as Oscar Dela Hoya’s wards as they see action underneath the Marco Antonio Barrera-Rocky Juarez WBC superfeatherweight world title fight.
