275th Birth Anniversary of Doña Gabriela Silang, the Joan of Arc of Ilocandia
HEROES build the nation. One of them who laid the foundations of our nation is Doña Gabriela Silang. She was born on March 19, 1731, in Barrio Caniogan, Santa, Ilocos Sur. Spanish power, at the time of her birth, reigned supreme in the country. The inhabitants were oppressed with many colonial obligations. Like those who preceded her who attempted to end the people’s sufferings, Doña Gabriela also yearned to end their miseries.

RP and Thailand — different systems, different outcomes?
MIDDLE of last month (February), I was in Bangkok for four days to attend the 2nd Meeting of the ASEAN Eminent Persons’ Group (EPG) tasked to formulate the broad guidelines for an ASEAN Charter. In Thailand, it was the period of mounting angry protests against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and, here at home coincidentally, it was the run-up to the 20th Anniversary of our People Power revolution in February 1986 which spawned new coup conspiracies and Presidential Proclamation 1017.
Character
A TEACHER with obvious liberal tendencies told her Grade 2 class that she was an atheist. She asked her students if they were atheists too. The Grade 4 pupils did not know what atheism was, but wanting to be like their teacher, they excitedly said yes, except for a girl named Lucy. She raised her hand and said: "I’m not an atheist."
Sustaining our fisheries resources
THE Philippines is richly endowed with fisheries resources in our more than two million square kilometers of marine waters and 750,000 hectares of inland waters. There are over 10,000 species of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants found in our waters.
‘3 trapos’
OUR title comes from the combination of the words traditional politicians hence "trapos.’’ The dictionary defines tradition as follow: Latin: (1) original, a surrender, delivery; see (a) treason: Latin: tradicio to give or deliver over or up, betrayal of trust, faith or treachery, (b) violation of sovereign or state; betrayal of one’s country. (2) The handling down of stories and custom handed down from generation to generation. (3) A long established custom or practice that has the effect of unwritten law. (4) Law delivery (5) Theology. Among Jews, Christians and Moslems the teachings of their prophets and of Jesus Christ that is handed down from generation to generation. Politicians – A person actively engaged in politics professionally or otherwise; frequently used in a derogatory sense with implications of seeking personal or partisan gain, scheming opportunism etc. The way politics is being practiced today seems to fit the derogatory definition above.
A story of conversion
SOME years ago there was a movie entitled "Alfie." It tells the story of a British playboy by that name. In the film, Alfie has affairs with five women, his "birds" as he calls them; in local parlance, "alaga."
Cleansing of the temple
SINCE the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making My Father’s house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of scripture, "Zeal for Your house will consume Me." At this the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign can You show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and You will raise it up in three days?" But He was speaking about the temple of His body. Therefore, when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.
An interview with God
NOBODY really has the exact figures of the number of computers and networks that make up the worldwide Net (shortcut term for the Internet). The Internet does not refer to a single network but a combination of various private networks that are joined at certain exchange points throughout the world. Some say that there are more than 30,000 networks linking about 10 million computers that are being used by millions of people based in various countries. The marvelous feature of the Internet is that nobody really controls it; nobody really owns it; and nobody can, at a click, turn the Internet off. No wonder the Internet is making a million things possible that were not even conceivable in earlier technologies. All because the Internet has the awesome capability to connect practically every person to every other person anywhere in the world. Making the Internet probably the most revolutionary mechanism for exchanging information in the history of communication technology. Including spreading the Gospel as well as other materials that strengthens our faith in our Lord God – with just with a click of the mouse.
