Determined to prove she’s got what it takes to make the boys’ high school soccer team and win the heart of her true love, Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) impersonates her twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk) and takes his place at his new prep school in this hilarious contemporary take on Shakespeare’s timeless comedy "Twelfth Night."
High school soccer player Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) learns the girls’ team has been eliminated and she can’t convince the boys’ coach or her soccer player boyfriend (Robert Hoffman) she’s good enough to join their boy’s team. So when her mischievous twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk) calls from London to say he won’t be back in time to start at his new prep school, Illyria Prep, Viola decides this is her chance to get even with the boys. With the help of a makeover artist friend (Jonathan Sadowski) she transforms herself into Sebastian and heads off to his school to make the boys’ soccer team.
But pretending to be a guy turns out to be a lot more complicated than Viola expected, especially when she starts developing feelings for her roommate, Duke (Channing Tatum), who has a long-simmering crush on the beautiful Olivia (Laura Ramsey), who in turn is attracted to the surprisingly sensitive new kid… "Sebastian."
Just as school officials close in on Viola’s secret identity, the real Sebastian arrives on campus, setting the stage for the hilarious climax of this contemporary take on Shakespeare’s timeless comedy "Twelfth Night."
Bynes starred in "What a Girl Wants," and hosted her own Nickelodeon show, "The Amanda Show." Before that, she was a regular performer on "All That." She stars as Viola in the DreamWorks Pictures "She’s The Man."
Do you enjoy doing comedies or do you want to try a more serious role?
I enjoy comedy for sure. Maybe one day I will do something dramatic. It is fun to do things I want to watch.
Did you know you would get involved with comedy?
No. When I would write down what I wanted to be, I would write I want to be an actor, comedian, hairdresser and fashion designer.
Do you get recognized walking down the street?
Yes. The older I get, the more people are familiar with the things I have done. That is really nice when they are nice. When they are not so nice, it’s not nice.
Was it hard making the change from Nickelodeon to "What I Like About You"?
No. It was just different. As I got older I was ready to move on. But it is like when you are in school, when you finish fourth grade you are ready for fifth. You remember it, but you are excited to move on.
What do you like to do during your free time?
I love to draw and paint. If I wasn’t an actor I would probably want to be a makeup artist or a clothing designer. I love to go to the movies and go out to dinner. I like to be with my friends, but I also like to be alone.
What do your friends call you?
My friends call me AB. My mom’s nickname for me is Chicky, because when I was born my brother said I looked like a chicken. That never wore off.
Would you ever be interested in a singing career?
I don’t think so. I might sing if I have to in a movie one day. I want to get better as an actor.
What kind of car do you own?
I have a Lexus and it is really nice. I first had a Honda and I drove that for a couple of years. I saved up and got the Lexus.
Do you get star struck?
I definitely do. When I met Johnny Depp, that was huge. Did you ever see the movie "Cry Baby"? It is one of my favorite movies, so meeting him was really cool.
On being born funny:
"I’m really not funny at all. If I have enough caffeine and sugar, there are occasions when I might find myself amusing, but funny? Nope, I’m not that".
Things that make Amanda smile:
"My iPod, dogs, shopping for shoes, sparkly things like rhinestones, the movie Clueless. Vanilla flavored lip gloss."
On her wish-list:
"I think Will Ferrell is super talented. So, maybe someday I will be fortunate enough to work with him. He’s my definition of genius."
On her main man:
"I’ve got a couple movie projects in the works. I’m not sure what I’ll do next for sure yet. As long as something is well-written and funny, that’s all that matters -- whether it’s a movie, play, or guest spot on another show. My dad and I are actually developing a couple of things. He is a dentist and he is the funniest guy I know. That’s where I get my comedic instincts."
On being Amanda:
"I recently turned 18 and I can definitely be mature when I want to be. But then I’m very immature when I haven’t made my bed in four days or I’m walking around all day in my pajamas. I wish I could say I was more mature, but I’m not."
On not being Amanda:
"Holly is definitely a little confused when it comes to men. She’s got boy-troubles, but that’s what makes the show so fun. Her love life is definitely unfolding."
