Rex Smith renews musical ties with Pinoy fans

During his debut performance in the Philippines in 2000, pop singing sensation Rex Smith was so overwhelmed by the tremendous reception he got from thousands of Filipino fans who filled the Araneta Coliseum for two consecutive nights of that memorable Valentine’s Day musical presentation.

Such outpouring of adulation from a huge but unknown sector of music lovers led an appreciate Smith to treat them to something special - and this resulted in the recording of his CD album, "Simply Rex," which was originally intended for release in the Philippines.

After six long years, Smith, who achieved international acclaim for his smash hit, "Simply Jessie,"among other chart-busters, will endeavor in a more personal way to renew his musical ties with his local fans when he returns in April for s series of live performances.

Billed as "Forever Rex," the musical event to be mounted by Steve O ‘Neal Productions On April 1 at the Big Dome and on April 2 at Hard Rock Café will kick off the summer series of live shows in this year’s concert calendar featuring foreign acts.

Tickets for the Araneta Coliseum concert are priced at P2,000, P1,600, P1,200, P800, P500, P300 and P100 and are available at Ticketnet outlets at all SM Department Stores and SM Malls and at the Araneta Coliseum box office.

Aside from "Simply Jessie," Smith is expected to perform a list of other unforgettable songs during his two-night return engagement, such as "Forever," "You Take My Breath Away," "Let’s Make A Memory," " Everlasting Love," "Steal Away," "True," "Could It Be Magic," and many more.

Smith is acknowledged as one of the few musical stars with a successful multi-dimensional career- a teen idol recording artist, a Gilbert and Sullivan musical leading man. a TV superhero, a soap opera star, a Broadway musical lead actor, a movie leading man and main role in a plethora of national tours.

Starting out as a rock and roll singer in the 70s, the Jacksonville(Florida)born artist had stints in a band called Rex and with Ted Nugent and toured with groups like Foreigner, Boston, AC/DC and Tom Petty.

He rocketed to fame in the musical world for his acclaimed Broadway debut as Danny Zuko in the original production of "Grease!" and when he received the Theater World award for his portrayal of Frederic in "The Pirates of Penzance" on Broadway, which he also reprised in the film adaptation.

His other starring roles on Broadway were in "The Human Comedy," "Grand Hotel," "The Scarlet Pimpernel," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Kiss Me Kate."

He also topbilled Lincoln Center’s,"Anything Goes," The Kennedy Center’s "West Side Story," and the Canadian production of Sunset Boulevard."

His national tours include "Grease!", "Joseph and His Technicolor Coat," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Godspell," "They’re Playing Our Song" and "Kiss Me Kate."

As a TV performer, Smith hosted "Solid Gold," starred in NBC’s "Street Hawk" and Daytime’s "As The World Turns," while his TV movies include "Sooner Or Later"(also the title of his platinum album featuring the hit song, "You Take My Breath Away"), "Daredevil" and Danielle Steele’s "Once In A Lifetime."

He also appeared as guest star on the primetime series "Norm," "JAG," "Caroline In The City," "The Sentinel," "Baywatch" and "Pacific Blue."

His sixth album, "Simply Rex," features a compilation of new and old hits, including the bestselling "You Take My Breath Away," and which was recorded to be released originally in the Philippines following his successful 2000 tour.
