Six members of parliament in Belgium and The Netherlands have asked their governments to look into the status of party-list representatives Reps. Crispin Beltran, Satur Ocampo, Joel Virador, Teddy Casiño, Rafael Mariano, and Liza Maza.

Beltran is detained in a hospital while the rest are under the custody of the House of Representatives.

In separate letters sent to Bayan Muna Chairman Dr. Reynaldo Lesaca Jr., the six European Union parliamentarians said they have raised questions before their parliaments and asked their foreign ministers to explain the situation in the Philippines.

Marie Jose Laloy, a member of parliament in Belgium and vice president of the human rights committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), informed Bayan Muna that he has undertaken initiatives within the global association of legislators to look into the issue.

Two other Belgian members of parliament — Jean Cornil and Inga Verhaert — separately rose on the issue before parliament in Brussels, Belgium on March 9 and 13.

At the parliament of The Netherlands, members of parliament Harry van Bommel and Farah Karimi also raised parliamentary questions about the human rights situation in the Philippines.

Van Bommel demanded explanations from the foreign minister and the minister of development cooperation about the warrantless arrests, brutal dispersal of peaceful demonstrations, and other violations of human rights in the Philippines.

He also asked the Dutch Foreign Ministry about its own appraisal of the Philippine situation and whether it found sufficient basis for the Philippine government’s proclamation of a state of national emergency.

Dutch minister of parliament Tiny Kox signed the international appeal for the release of Beltran.

Ocampo thanked Clark and the six EU parliamentarians.

"Mrs. Arroyo is reaping the start of a global indignation over her attacks on due process, human rights, and civil liberties just to prolong her illegitimate and hated presidency. We expect more parliamentarians and people’s movements across the world to repudiate the new fascist Arroyo dictatorship."
