Honda Cars Philippines chose the scenic province of Pangasinan as the staging ground for the recent 3rd leg of its Honda-Petron Xtra Amazing Fuel Eco Run, a fuel efficiency driving competition.
Thirty teams of Honda City and Jazz owners came from Central Luzon provinces and as far away as Baguio and Metro Manila to compete in the event that started at the Petron station in Lucao, Dagupan City and ran all the way to Alaminos City, home of the Hundred Islands, some 58 kilometers away.
HCPI deputy head for marketing Arnel Doria, who flagged off the drivers and their navigators, said, "This event aims to promote more fuel efficient driving. If we drive more efficiently, we will use less fuel, then we will import less crude oil, and we will be less dependent on foreign oil."
The eco run coincided with the 13th anniversary of Honda Cars Pangasinan headed by its chairman Melchor Co and its president Herman Chong who also gave their support to the event that also demonstrated the Honda i-DSI engine’s fuel efficient features.
Best fuel performance in the Jazz 1.3 automatic category was recorded by Michael Asuncion and navigator Mary Grace Asuncion with mileage of 37.1 kilometers per liter.
Topping the Jazz 1.3 manual category was the team of Manuel Serafica and Raul Carunungan who averaged 32.2 kilometers to a liter.
In the Honda City 1.3 L division, Red Erfe Mejia and Tintin Canillas came first with a 31.3 kilometers per liter performance in the automatic category while Ronald Geronimo and Hubert Sy Tu bested the manual category with 31.2 kilometers per liter average.
The Automobile Association of the Philippines which used a Honda Jazz pace car averaged 35 kms to a liter.
All winning teams received P10,000 each during ceremonies held at the Don Gonzalo Montemayor Wharf.
Doria shared some of the fuel saving practices learned form the event which include the following: Maintaining your engine rpm between 1500-2000. This gives just enough power to run 60-80 kms per hour, the speed that generates the best fuel efficiency and anticipating your next move, looking beyond the car or cars in front of you so that you can anticipate when to apply the brakes and use the inertia of the car instead of using gasoline.
Honda-Petron Xtra Amazing Fuel Eco Run will go to Cebu and Davao in the coming months.
