LEGASPI (AFP) - A leftist youth leader has been shot dead in the latest of a series of suspected political killings in the country, police and activist groups said Monday.
Cris Hugo, 20, of the League of Filipino Students was gunned down by two unknown assailants late Sunday as he walked home with a teacher in Legaspi city, southeast of Manila, said local police Senior Inspector Rico Nocillado.
The League of Filipino Students described the killing as politically motivated and said they held President Gloria Arroyo's government accountable.
Authorities suspect the student group is a front for communist guerrillas.
Leftists say more than 30 of its activists have been killed in the country since last year. The government has consistently denied any involvement in the crimes.
