GBP says Larios is dangerous

By nick giongco

CEBU CITY — Boxing outfit Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) is puzzled over the insistence of Manny Pacquiao to bring over Mexican Oscar Larios to Manila for a ten-rounder in June or July.

While Pacquiao’s handlers and even Filipinos alike doesn’t see Larios as much of a threat anymore since he is said to be on the way down, a high-ranking executive from GBP doesn’t see it that way.

"That is not an easy fight," said Eric Gomez, vice-president of the innovative and fast-rising promotional company based in California that is owned and operated by Oscar dela Hoya.

Despite losing his last fight to Pacquiao sparmate Israel Vazquez, Gomez believes Larios has the tools needed to shame the Filipino icon in front of his adoring fans.

Gomez said Larios will definitely be in terrific shape if the proposed battle with Pacquiao materializes since the Mexican won’t be subjected to "three days without food."

"Making 122-lbs is hard for Oscar (Larios). It’s killing him," said Gomez, who left for Los Angeles via Hong Kong on board Cathay Pacific on Sunday morning.

Larios, the 5-8 banger from Guadalajara, walks around weighing between 135 to 140 lbs.

"So he won’t have to starve himself for this fight," added Gomez, who was accompanied in the business trip to the country by another renowned matchmaker Sampson Lekowicz.

According to Pacquiao’s confidant Wakee Salud, the date of the fight will be known this week.

Pacquiao and Salud were supposed to fly to Los Angeles last night, but it had to be cancelled after receiving word from there that they need not go anymore as the boxer’s US handlers are all set to finalize the contract of the Pacquiao-Larios.
