MANDAUE CITY – Former RP Flyweight champion Z Gorres captured the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) superflyweight crown the other night at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Complex in this city.
The 23-year-old southpaw Gorres outpointed Thai Waenpetch Chuwatana in their 12-round title bout witnessed by some 6,000 fans.
The stylish Gorres, who dedicated the match to his benefactor Rudy Salud, started to dominate the bout in the third round by flooring Chuwatana with a perfectly-timed right uppercut. The 32-year-old Chuwatana was able to beat the count, then immediately utilized a number of roughhousing tactics to avoid Gorres’ onslaught.
Gorres continued to hurt a backtracking Chuwatana with his stiff uppercuts and left straights. The embattled Thai was deducted a point in the eighth round by referee Bruce McTavish for shoving Gorres at the back of his head.
Gorres again staggered Chuwatana in the ninth round with a left cross but the still besieged Thai was able to move away and at times parry the Cebuano’s attack with his unsportmanlik style.
Gorres, who is being groomed to fight in a major US bout this coming May, contentedly settled for the decision win with scores of 118-109, 120-106 and 119-107.
"I’m dedicating this win to Sir Rudy who has been one of my inspirations not only for my boxing career but of my life" said Gorres.
Salud recently underwent a major operation but has recovered from the same surgery.
With the win, Gorres, who once reigned as RP flyweight champ in 2003, improved his record to 23-1-1 with 12 knockouts while Chuwatana dropped to 23-8-2, 14 KO’s.
In the chief supporting bout, World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific king Czar Amonsot decisioned Thai Decho Bangkluaygym in their 10-round non-title fight.
Wakee Salud protégé Jojo Bar! don crowned himself as RP flyweight ruler, scoring a split verdict over Rocky Fuentes in a 12-round fight for the vacant title.
The blockbuster promotion was witnessed by Golden Boy Promotions executives Eric Gomez and Sampson Lewkowicz who recently forged a deal with ALA Boxing Gym boss Tony Aldeguer in co-promoting Gorres and Boholano phenom Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista.
