Philippine Army 109th Anniversary
THE Philippine Army was formally established on March 22, 1897, by the Tejeros Convention with General Artemio Ricarte as its first Captain General. It traces its distinguished record to the battle at Mactan, Cebu, in April, 1521, when Filipino valor displayed its finest form as native inhabitants defended the country’s freedom against foreign invaders. The many rebellions that challenged colonial might climaxed by the Philippine Revolution (1896-1898) and the Filipino-American War honed the qualities that were the hallmarks of the officers and men who comprise the Philippine Army: Fighters for freedom, sentinels of the nation, models of the youth.

Our duty as citizens
WE leave the manhunt for the plotters is in the good hands of the police while we focus on pushing economic reform forward. At the end of the day, it is the economy that will play a determining role in our future.

Barefoot in the park
ACCORDING to impeachable sources, former Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman was arrested by police not only because she was wearing a black T-shirt but also because of what was written on it: Patalsikin Na ("Oust now"). Now Na. A highly literate police officer was offended by the Taglish, as he considered the juxtaposition of the English and Tagalog languages a bad example for the youth.

Where there’s a will
FORMER President Fidel V. Ramos noted in his column yesterday that the clamor for the removal of both Thai Prime Minister Thaksin and President Arroyo "for different reasons intensifies to this day in each country."

Aviation problem
IN 2010, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will be stepping down as President of the country. In the same year, unless something is done, all the domestic airlines will stop flying because they have no pilots to fly their planes or mechanics and maintenance men to service them.

Search for a slogan
QUEZON CITY – in spite of the much-vaunted administrative acumen of some of its officials – appears to be disoriented and befuddled as to what direction to take in its search of an inspiring slogan to guide its mission of governance.

Water crisis hits even Europe
MEXICO CITY — About 41 million people in Europe lack sufficient access to drinking water, and 85 million lack basic drainage, sewage or sanitation services, officials said in a report presented at the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico.

Joseph, foster father of Jesus
JACOB [became] the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.

More than balance is required
THE need to broaden our focus beyond the strictly political and economic perspectives, when we consider the governance of our society, may appear obvious to many of us. We may also readily agree that it is proper to include other perspectives as well, such as the spiritual and moral, the professional and organizational, the infrastructural and environmental. In our national community, these are no less important, especially when we think beyond mere personalities and consider the long term, say over 25 many years or over a period close to one generation.

Worsening rift
THE dialogue Taiwanese leaders call to engage with China to reduce tensions arising from the crossstraits issue amid Taipei’s bid for independence may be to no avail if Taipei insists on separating Taiwan from mainland China. For many years since 2000, the Taiwan government has extended more than 40 olive branches of peace to PRC (People’s Republic of China). Although the 23 million people of Taiwan have long held their willingness to be in goodwill in reconciliation, proactive cooperation, and permanent peace with China, this may not be materialized so long as Taiwan does not accept the condition offered by China to Taiwan of the "One China" policy. I don’t see how this reconciliation is possible, since Taiwan’s opposition parties treat Taiwan as China’s province.

Purging the poison
PRESIDENT GMA says recent economic gains such as increased tax collection, growing OFW remittances, and the robust peso and stock market could help deter destabilization and improve the delivery of basic services.
