Know your daily bread

Despite common knowledge that rice is a staple in every Filipino meal, it cannot be denied that bread is becoming an alternative. Fact is eight out of 10 households that WELL BEING has inquired are used to having bread sandwiches either for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner instead of the usual rice and viand.

Reasons for these changing habits are brought about by different factors. Mothers and housewives save more by cutting down on allowances and giving their children packed sandwiches. Some men find it convenient to grab a loaf or two during busy days. On the other hand, the health conscious finds specialized breads indispensable in their diets.

"[Bread] has become as such because of the many things it can do. Although we Filipinos just can’t do away with rice, the innovations that are being put into breads are beneficial not only economically but in a healthy manner, as well," says Gardenia Bakeries (Philippines) Inc. product manager Charry Yamzon during a recent plant visit.

To further enrich the buying public’s knowledge about Gardenia's different types of bread and how it is beneficial to people, Yamzon shares a rundown of their products distinct properties and qualities that make it a winner to their loyal patrons. Read on and get to know your daily bread!

• Classic White Bread

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) discouraged the use of bromate flour for baking due to its potential cancer-causing properties. In most developed countries bromate flour is no longer used, but here in the Philippines it is still widely utilized in the bread industry. In Gardenias Classic White Bread, rest assured that it is bromate free, so as the rest of its bread line.

Classic White Bread is also vitamin fortified. It contains Vitamin A which supports visual growth and development; Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) which helps in the normal functioning of the brain; Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) which contributes in promoting normal metabolism and growth; Vitamin B3 (Niacin) which helps the body absorb nutrients that provide energy; Vitamin C which provides help in strengthening the immune system; Calcium which helps keep strong teeth and bones; and Iron which helps in preventing anemia.

Lastly, it has Folate which according to the WHO may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect

• 5-Grain Loaf

Composed of oat flakes, linseeds, sesame seeds, wheat flakes and sunflower kernels and hereunder are their nutritive values.

*Oat flakes has the highest concentrations of protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, thiamin, folacin and vitamin E; more than other unfortified whole grains, such as wheat, corn, rice and rye.

*Linseeds are a good source of fiber and omega 3 fatty acids. It also has anti-cancer effects and may help manage menopausal symptoms. They can prevent and relieve constipation as well as soothe digestion.

*Sesame seeds help to protect the body from free radicals. They are a key source of phytic acid, magnesium and calcium. Phytic acid could inhibit cancer, specifically of the colon.

*Wheat flakes is a very good source of dietary fiber and manganese, and as a good source of magnesium.

*Sunflower kernels provides key nutrients such as essential fatty acids, vitamin E, folate, magnesium and zinc.

• High Calcium Loaf

The first and only high calcium loaf that help build strong bones and teeth and the only bread recommended by the Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation Inc. (OSPFI). For lactose intolerant people who are looking for milk and cheese alternative, High Calcium Loaf may be the answer.

Apart from it being vitamin fortified as well, High Calcium Loaf is heart friendly because it is low in fat and cholesterol-free.

• Carrot-Raisin Loaf

One of the best sources of Vitamin A are carrots and it has more than twice the amount of beta-carotene. Studies also show that carrots have strong antioxidant properties and are reported to reduce the risk of a wide range of diseases including some types of cancer. Through its antioxidant mechanisms, carotenoids also help strengthen the health of the immune system.

On the other hand, raisins provide high levels of carbohydrates and fiber and are also recommended for their calcium phosphorus, sodium, and iron contents. Not only are raisins a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, calcium and certain b vitamins, they are also fat and cholesterol free. Raisins are also a very rich source of antioxidants. They contain only natural sugar

• High Fiber Wheat Bread
