A state of national emergency (Presidential Proclamation 1017) was declared on Feb. 24, 2006. What was supposed to be the celebration of the EDSA 1 People Power Revolution turned out to be a confusing mix of alleged coup plots, warrantless arrests, rallies and demonstrations.
It was just an ordinary day for the civilians until a stirring rally along EDSA changed everything. Classes and work were suspended. The media had a field day. We students even almost celebrated when we were told that it would be a free day for us, not knowing the whole story behind it.
Nonetheless, when we learned about it, the realization that this event would affect us struck us, proving that everything is interwined with one other. Even the smallest of our decisions has an effect on the bigger community. What more if it would be the decision of our President? If we are having a hard time deciding for ourselves, then our President surely has the hardest time deciding especially for an entire country.
We believe the declaration was a well thought-of decision by the President. People might think that this would just lead to martial law but don’t they also think that we had enough of that? Don’t they think that we have learned our lesson? The President is an ordinary Filipino just like us but with authority. She knows that martial law before was a nightmare and it’s just wise not to repeat it. All she wanted was to maintain the peace and order of the country.
Since the proclamation has already been lifted, it goes to show that the President’s motive was just to settle the chaos in our country. Everything fell back to place and there was definitely no martial law. Our country can be compared to a little kid. This kid, who when he misbehaves, gets a little spanking from his parents. The decree is the little spanking for us to learn from our mischief.
Of course, this would also teach us not to go against authority. The authority would not do something harmful to the citizens.
This event surely teaches us a lot of things. However, the most important teaching is for us, citizens to be united with our government. Our goverment is our guide. Working with them hand-in-hand is the only way to get our country back on its knees. They’re like the head and we are the body. We cannot function without each other.
Therefore, it is about time to forget our differences and make it a way to start anew.
