The city government of Makati has adopted two black crowned night herons rescued by the Parks and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-PAWB).
Mayor Jejomar C. Binay said the heron will be comfortably housed at the city-owned Makati Park and Garden, beside the legendary Pasig River, for display and education purposes.
"The adoption of the herons underscores the city government’s thrust of protecting the environment and wildlife for posterity and enjoyment of the coming generations," Binay said.
The herons are still in the custody of DENR-PAWB pending the acquisition of transport permit.
When officially transferred to Makati’s custody, the city government will shoulder all expenses in providing for the needs of the herons.
Binay directed City Veterinarian Ma. Vivien C. Manalastas and the caretakers of the Makati Park and Garden to provide proper care and maintenance, including veterinary care, for the said wildlife.
The mayor also ordered the city veterinarian to make a quarterly report on the status of the adopted herons, copies of which will be furnished to him and to the DENR-PAWB.
Meanwhile, the Makati Park and Garden is fast becoming a bird sanctuary in Metro Manila. Recently, it hosted the launching of the Bird Watcher’s Club of Makati, in an aim to encourage residents to protect birds in the city.
Likewise, the City Council has passed Ordinance No. 2005-053, declaring Makati as a bird sanctuary. The ordinance seeks the preservation of wild birds and their natural habitat.
Penalties for violations of the ordinance may reach fines as high as P5,000 and imprisonment of not more than one year for repeat offenders.
