‘Jewel in the Palace’ star meets Filipino fans

By ANTONETTE VALDEZ-Pua

Fans of the epic–like Koreanovela "Jewel in the Palace," packed the five floors of the Market! Market! mall in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig Thursday evening to see in person Korean actress Yang Mi Kyung otherwise known to many as Lady Han in "Jewel in the Palace."

After the lively performance of the Sexbomb dancers and heart–wrenching numbers by ‘Pinoy Pop Superstar" champ Jonalyn Viray, Queen of Asianovela Faith Cuneta and alternative band Shamrock, Mi Kyung finally appeared on stage with Korean child actress Cho Jeong Eun (little Jang Guem in "Jewel in the Palace") and the deafening screams from an excited crowd reached its maximum level.

As she constantly waved at everybody, an overwhelmed Mi Kyung admitted on stage that she was already informed of her popularity in this country but she didn’t expect the crowd that she was going to face to be this big.

"I want to express my gratitude to all of you. I hope you would continue supporting us," Mi Kyung said in Korean.

Ever since "Jewel in the Palace" hit television via GMA–7, women, children and even men became hooked on it thus including its airing time in their daily schedules. To them, missing one episode of the show is like neglecting an important obligation in life.

According to avid viewers of "Jewel in the Palace," this show is a novelty in TV programming because it has a unique story. Far from the typical story on romantic love or love triangle, "Jewel in the Palace" imparts moral values and tips on how to live a good and healthy life.

In the story, Lady Han stood as Jang Guem’s mentor in the kitchen. She trained Jang Guem to cook nutritious food for the king of the palace that they work for using herbs and other healthy ingredients. Theirs was not only a teacher–student relationship because they also shared the kind of love that a mother and daughter have for each other. Everything good between them, however, had to end when an unfortunate incident took the life of Lady Han, leaving Jang Guem to take a new path in her life.

"I feel so happy to be here in the Philippines. But I haven’t seen much of it yet because of my hectic schedule. I wish I could visit all the churches in Manila before I leave your country," told Mi Kyung.

Because she had to attend to other important commitments that same evening, Mi Kyung’s quick stop at Market! Market! was made even quicker when the organizers of the program left its hosts, Starstruck Batch 2 finalists CJ Muere and Meagan Young, to interview the guest of honor instead of granting that task to the media invited to cover the event.

That resulted in a lot of unanswered questions.

Before she left the stage, Mi Kyung left this important message to all: "I hope that all of you will be just like Jang Guem who, despite all the difficulties in life, still went on to pursue and strive to reach her dreams. It’s my wish that all of you continue with that pursuit in life."
