THE FIRST step towards Pilipinas Basketball’s full control over the affairs of the sport in the country begins on Tuesday when the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) holds its General Assembly in Makati, POC spokesperson Joey Romasanta said yesterday.
Pilipinas Basketball’s ascension will actually be the kickoff of a crucial week for the POC, whose leaders as well as the major stakeholders of the new basketball body, are scheduled to fly to Seoul to meet with international basketball federation secretary general Patrick Baumann.
Baumann as well as POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco will be in the Korean capital to grace the 15th Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and International Olympic Committee Executive Board.
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala will be joined by a few other high-caliber league officials, while Commissioner Chino Trinidad will carry the torch of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL). The UAAP and NCAA are also sending officials to Seoul.
Romasanta said Baumann doesn’t have a choice but to hook up with the prime movers of Pilipinas Basketball, who POC legal counsel Ding Tanjuatco had labeled as "the backbone of Philippine basketball."
Only former Sen. Joey Lina did not affix his signature to the formation of the new cage body as he reiterated that he will not abandon his beelaguered colleagues in the Basketball Association of the Philippines that the Fiba continues to recognize despite its expulsion from the POC.
A few days ago, its secretary general, Graham Lim, found to be an illegal alien, was arrested by authorities.
The POC is hoping that the suspension on the Philippines will be lifted at the soonest possible time so the country can form a competitive team to the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, from Dec. 1 to 15.
