By eddie alinea

THE COUNTRY’S winningest coach and the first of only two Filipino athletes to have been named "Mr. Basketball" and "Mr. Football" will be the recipients of this year’s Manila Sports Greats award.

Virgilio "Baby" Dalupan, who won at least 49 championships in both the amateur and professional ranks, and Eduardo Pacheco, who carried the country’s colors in the different international competitions — as a basketball and football player — will be feted during the opening ceremony of the Fifth Manila Youth Games (MY Games) on April 2 at the historic Rizal Memorial Track Stadium.

Dalupan, born in Malabon but is raised in Manila, won 12 titles as mentor of the University of the East in the UAAP and 15 in the PBA, including 9 for the fable Crispa squad. He also had a number of titles during the MICAA days.

Dalupan, known as "The Maestro," highlighted his stint in the UAAP by steering the Warriors to seven straight championships – a record still unmatched up to this time.

The son of former UE founder Francisco Dalupan Sr., has also guided the Warriors to six National Inter-Collegiate championships.

Along with his similarly brilliant record with Crispa, earned for him the national coaching job to the 1959 World Championship in Chile, 1967 Universiade in Tokyo, 1979 Asian Games in Bangkok and 1971 and 1972 Pesta Sukan Festival in Singapore.

Pacheco, a stalwart of the University of Santo Tomas in both its basketball and football teams, was first named by the Philippine Sportswriters Association as its "Mr. Basketball" awardee in 1962 for being part of the RP team to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and the Asian Basketball Confederation Championship in 1961. He also saw action in the 1963 ABC and 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

He was also a member of the RP football team in 1954 and 1958 Asian Games. He was also part of the team that took part in the 1963 Asian World Cup elimination.
