Summer classes in public and private high schools nationwide will start on April 17, Monday, and end on May 27, Saturday, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced yesterday.
Acting Education Secretary Fe Agudo Hidalgo said the schedule of the 36-day 2006 summer classes is indicated in DepEd Order No. 10, Series of 2005.
Hidalgo said summer classes will enable students in public and private secondary schools who failed in one or more subjects last school year to enroll as regular students in the next curricular year level in school year 2006-2007 which will open on June 5.
She said the DepEd order states that each subject offered in summer classes shall be on a three-hour daily session from Monday to Saturday.
Dr. Vilma Logronio Labrador, Education Assistant Secretary for Programs and Projects, said the holding of summer classes in a particular secondary school in urban or rural communities shall be at the initiative of concerned parents who, at least a week or two before the opening of summer classes, shall, as a group, petition the local school principal to offer subjects which their children failed during the regular school year.
Some subjects usually flunked by students include Mathematics and Science subjects Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
Labrador explained that since the DepEd has no specific budget for the operation of summer classes in public high schools, concerned parents may decide to contribute for the honoraria of teachers tapped by the school principals to handle such classes. (Tony Pe. Rimando)
