DIGOS CITY – At least three town executives and two militant groups are urging the conversion of the Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative (Dasureco) into a real people cooperative.
Supporting the move for the conversion of Dasureco into a true cooperative include Digos City Mayor Arsenio Latasa, Hagonoy Mayor Jose Superales, Jr. and Padada Mayor Antonio Razonable. Joining them are the Nagkahiusang Maguuma sa Davao del Sur (Namadds) and the Citizen Alliance for People Empowerment Davao del Sur Chapter (Cause-DS).
Latasa issued an executive order directing the Dasureco management to conduct a thorough study and initiate appropriate actions.
City cooperative officer Juanito Camasura said he will act on the mayor’s order as he was dismayed by five members of the Dasureco board who refused to come down the office after their term expired.
The refusal of Dasureco board to recognize Podoc Migo, who won a seat in the board through a just concluded elections in Padada town, irritated Razonable, compelling him to back a move to convert Dasureco into a real cooperative.
The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has also been asked to order the relief of the existing board of directors for their failure to follow the agency’s rules and guidelines.
Namadds secretary general and spokesperson Renato Pacaide said they rally behind the call to change the status of Dasureco in accordance with the policies provided by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA).
"If we need to lodge protest rallies and mass actions against Dasureco, we are very much willing to do it," said Pecaide, adding the organization has about 24,000 active members all over the province of Davao del Sur, mostly Dasureco consumers.
Cause-DS claimed it has 10,000 members enough to hold strong mass actions in the streets of Digos City.
Earlier, some influential personalities in the city initiated some sorts of signature campaign for a unified objective that is to effect change in the present status of Dasureco into a veritable cooperative.
