WHAT’S THE country’s most beloved sporting hero up to these days?
He no longer frequents his favorite billiards hall in Malate. Neither does he stay up late to attend bigtime derbies across the metropolis nor film TV commercials until the wee hours of the morning.
So what’s keeping Manny Pacquiao busy?
Aside from being close to his wife Jinkee, who is three months pregnant, and sons Emmanuel Jr. and Michael Stephen, Pacquiao spends most of his time in front of his high-end laptop inside the comfort of his living room in General Santos City.
"Internet lang most of the time," Pacquiao said yesterday, three months before he squares off with Oscar Larios of Mexico at the Araneta Coliseum on July 2.
Pacquiao said he is obeying his doctor’s order that he makes the most of the free time to rest his body in anticipation of the heavy workload at trainer Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood beginning in May.
"Talagang pahinga muna tayo," said Pacquiao, who spent five days at Cardinal Santos Hospital two weeks ago due to stress.
Roach, who was here for a brief visit recently, said Pacquiao will report to his doorstep in the first week of May and they’ll both fly back to Manila in June and set up training camp in Baguio City for three weeks.
A week before the fight, Pacquiao and Roach would head back to Manila to attend several pre-fight activities like the press conference, public training and official weigh-in.
After Pacquiao disposes of Larios, it’s going to be Erik Morales in October or November or Marco Antonio Barrera on Nov. 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
