Tocsin for Thaksin
DESPITE getting 57 percent of the vote last Sunday, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced his resignation yesterday. This came after his audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej at the seaside palace in Hua Hin.

The role of religion in conflict resolution
THE concept of inter-faith dialogues as a means to conflict resolution was put on the table of international negotiation by the Philippines several years ago, and has been gaining momentum ever since. A pet project of Speaker Joe de Venecia, arising from his experiences with the problems in the south, the Speaker took advantage of the Philippines’ non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council last year, at the time Philippine Ambassador to the UN Lauro Baja held the chair for the rotating presidency, to present the concept to the international body. The unanimous approval of the Philippine resolution, for the use of the religious sector in conflict resolution was considered a diplomatic victory for the Philippines. When he presented the concept to the Security Council, Speaker De Venecia pointed out that religious leaders could work with political leaders and civil society to resolve political/religious conflicts more effectively than diplomats alone.

Dependent on La Niña
(Editor’s note: All of RP welcomes La Niña because our irrigation system does not work as noted by the author.)

Jesus and Abraham
JESUS said to the Jews, "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps My word will never see death." [So] the Jews said to Him, "Now we are sure that You are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet You say, ‘Whoever keeps My word will never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do You make Yourself out to be?" Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is worth nothing; but it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ You do not know Him, but I know Him. And if I should say that I do not know Him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know Him and I keep His word. Abraham your father rejoiced to see My day; he saw it and was glad." So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM." So they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

Balance from many perspectives
GOVERNANCE, as is the case of the broader challenge of development, begins and ends with individual persons.

Thaksin steps down
AFTER five years as Thailand’s prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, touted as "Asia’s Berlusconi," announced his resignation after meeting with King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The scandal that triggered his downfall was a US-billion deal between the Singaporean company, Temasek Holdings, and the Shin Corp., his family business. No taxes were paid by the latter. All that precipitated a serious political crisis in Thailand during which thousands of enraged demonstrators poured into the streets to demand his immediate ouster while burning effigies of Singapore’s leaders. It was no secret that Temasek Holdings has intimate connections with the Singaporean government for its CEO, Mme Ho Ching, is the wife of Prime Minister (and Finance Minister) Lee Hsien Loong. As PM Thaksin engaged in high-stakes brinkmanship economists were gnashing their teeth at the thought of another regional crisis similar to the one in 1997. Strange as it may seem, the Thai military kept its cool.

Agrarian reform and urban poverty
THE news was long delayed in coming but it did eventually last Tuesday in the front pages when studies conducted by various foreign groups made known the "positive impact of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program on the economic and social wellbeing of Filipino farmers."

A serious holiday
AS your Holy Week penance, answer this question quick. Who is the author of this limerick: "Kahit maliit, basta malimit, patungo din sa langit?" (My own translation: Give small but give often, and your reward is heaven.)
