Going on her 11th year in show business, singer-actress Angelika dela Cruz has gone through the roughest times. She was tagged an ingrate and many more when she moved from ABS-CBN to GMA-7 and back.
Her recording career was halted for six years because of legal matters and being a public figure, her lovelife too in the past was scrutinized. Other intrigues have also behallen the singer-actress including speculation she went through a lot of physical enhancements. Yet as they say in show business, the show must go on and that’s exactly what Angelika has been doing.
And from the looks of it, things are getting brighter in her career!
Take for example last December of 2005, for six years she has prayed that she would pry herself free from legal entanglements with BMG Records Pilipinas, the recording company that sued her and in the process halted the growth of her recording career. And it finally came true a few weeks before Christmas - a feat she calls an advance birthday gift from the Lord!
"Right now, what I really want is to sing again because my court case is over. Okay na po, pwede na akong gumawa ng album...para sa akin po naman wala naman rason para maipit pa ako. Puso na lang ang sana pinairal noon. Wala naman akong pagkukulang at ginawang masama," said the actress.
The recording offers she had to forego in the 10 years she couldn’t record included an album deal with Alpha Records and Star Records and even the soundtracks of her drama series. She was also supposed to be the first recording artist of GMA Records.
"I was just lucky with Alpha Record’s Alvin Rivera. He was very nice and understanding. They released me na walang paghahabol at wala silang ginawa sa akin legally. I’m very thankful to them," she revealed.
Just recently too, she was bestowed the new title of a "Dance Diva" after winning the "Shall We Dance? The Celebrity Dance Challenge," a ballroom dancing contest at ABC 5. For months, she bested other celebrity competitors before reaching the finals and bag-ging the championship and winning half a million pesos in cash prize!
Angelika described ABC 5’s "The Celebrity Dance Challenge" as physically taxing and draining. In fact she would end up with bruises in every competition. And before the finals, she had to tan herself to hide the bruises she sustained from rigorous hours of practice - indeed she was a real dance diva in the works!
Angelika did six dances in the finals: Swing, Rhumba, Cha Cha, Pasa Doble, Salsa and Fox Trot.
"It was really a new experience for me. Masarap ‘yung feeling na matatakot ka. Hindi mo alam kung malalaglag ka or what. Of course I was very happy because I won," related Angelika.
So what could have been her edge over the other contestants?
"The judges told me that if this was a singing contest, the songs we chose were for belting. Biritan talaga! Kung baga ‘yung mga dance namin pinuno namin. Even if I was scared of liftings, I still went with it. Kahit alam kong kabadong-kabado ako ginawa ko pa rin. I found out that I love being lifted and thrown in the air during the ballroom dancing contest," she smiled.
With regards to her acting career, she returms to the boobtube soon in a new drama series, as an aspect of her career she also excels in. She will play the coveted role of Lavinia of the remake for television of the Sharon Cuneta mega-hit "Bituing Walang Ningning."
"I’ll be the one saying the immortal lines of Cherie Gil. Actually I immediately bought a copy of the film, even if I saw it already, after the role was offered to me. It was to refresh my memory of the movie," she enthusiastically shared.
According to her, Lavinia in the upcoming ABS-CBN drama series is not all throughout an antagonist like in the film version. Her life story will also be tackled so it will be known why she became evil from being a good person. And this is her role’s challenge, she said.
When she moved over from GMA-7, Angelika immediately did the ABS-CBN soap opera "Sana Wala Ng Wakas," followed by "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin." She was also offered "Panday" and what could be the Pinoy version of "Justice League of America," "Super Ingo" but she opted for the musical-drama "Bituing Walang Ningning."
"For me it is more challenging ‘yung Lavinia role. In ‘Panday’ I had to learn Wu Shu which was okay and exciting kasi may matutunan ka rin. Kaso lang naka-can siya and hindi mo alam kung kailan maipapalabas, so sa akin paano ako makakatanggap ng ibang soap. In ‘Super Ingo’ my character hurts kids from the beginning. I can’t do that. Personally, kahit sabihin mong acting lang hindi ko kayang makapanakit ng bata," she explained.
Because she idolized Cherie Gil was also one of the reasons she took on the role of Lavinia. It was an avenue which would remind her fans and the viewing public alike that she still sings. She will also prove her mettle in singing in the soundtrack of the series, her first recording after six years. Acting-wise actress, she knows she can never outdo or outclass Cherie Gil’s performance in the movie, but she’s putting more than 100% effort to her role to prove her own mettle!
The 24-year old Angelika expressed: "Siguro in a way I’ve become matured as an actress, mas malalim na unlike before na pa-cutey lang. Gusto kong makilala as an actress na kahit anong role kaya niyang gampanan...Ako naman kasi as long as I have work and I like what I’m doing, I enjoy it and, I’m happy!"
Next in line for her is her recording an album which she says will contain love songs that Filipinos love listening to. A dance album is not far from her mind too especially that she’s tagged a "Dance Diva" nowadays.
As a mature actress, will she be doing any sexy movies soon?
"Okay naman ako maging daring sa pelikula basta gusto ko maganda ang script at magaling ang director. Kung gagawin ko yun may saysay naman dapat at maipagmamalki ‘yung proyekto, hindi yung maghuhubad lang. Open-minded ako pero hindi talaga bold that I have to show my body parts," she concluded.
