Some P3 million worth of fake Nescafe products was confiscated by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) during a raid in Quezon City.
NBI-National Capital Region Special Investigator Glenn Lacaran said that the raid was conducted at a factory of the YHK International Forwarder and Brokerage located at No. 65 Howmart Road, Barangay Apolonio Samson, Quezon City.
The said factory is reportedly owned by a certain Perry Yao and several others. They will be charged for violation of the Intellectual Property Code for Unfair Competition.
Lacaran said that they conducted the raid after a complaint was made by Nestle Philippines Inc. represented by RV Domingo Law Firm.
Before the raid, agents of the NBI conducted a surveillance operation in the area to confirm the information given by the complainant.
They then applied for several search warrants from Manila Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Eugenio Antonio.
Lacaran said that the said factory usually distributes their counterfeit Nestle products in provinces away from the National Capital Region.
He divulged that they have successfully raided similar factories and storehouses in Davao, Cebu and Zamboanga.
During the raid, NBI agents were able to seize 2,056 boxes of fake Nescafe 3-in-1 coffee products, 804 pieces of empty Nescafe cardboard boxes and two sealer machines.
Lacaran said that aside from a similar raid which they conducted November of last year, the raid in Quezon City was one of the biggest as far as Necafe products are concerned.
Last November 22, 2005, NBI-NCR agents conducted a raid in Sta. Mesa Heights, Quezon City, wherein they discovered a factory which was capable of manufacturing millions worth of products in a day.
''They usually get their low-quality coffee from Divisoria. They buy sacks of the imported coffee and put them in packages of Nescafe,'' Lacaran said. He said that they learned that wholesalers in Divisoria get the imported coffee from China.
