Granny, Magnolia overpower rivals

By rey c. lachica

GRANNY GOOSE Tortillos gave coach Robert Sison a fitting birthday present yesterday while Magnolia Ice Cream celebrated another awe-inspiring performance from Kelly Williams in the PBL Unity Cup at the Far Eastern University gym.

Drawing big games from Kelvin dela Peña, Dennis Concha and Jett Latonio, the Snackmasters ended a two-game losing run with a 76-71 win over Hapee-PCU.

Williams, on the other hand, waxed hot in the final quarter, scoring 11 of the team’s 20 points to power the Spinners to a 63-57 win over a hard-luck Harbour Centre squad.

"Although we struggled a bit, I’m glad we pulled it through. Napasarap tuloy ang birthday ko," said Sison. "They’re still adjusting to my system."

Despite the win, Sison said his players still need more seasoning, saying: "Kulang pa sa maturity. But I’m confident that with the help of my coaching staff, we can bring their game to a higher and mature level."

Williams finished with 23 points as he atoned himself from a dull performance in the team’s 60-68 setback to Montaña Pawnshop last Sunday.

Unable to break Magnolia’s defense, the Port Masters were held to just one field goal in the first five minutes while Williams feasted on the token defense put up by Rob Reyes. Williams also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

Granny Goose’s lack of maturity was evident late in the game when the Snackmasters almost squandered a huge-13 point lead.

But thanks to the torrid outside shooting of Dela Peña, Concha and Latonio and the strong inside plays of the 6-foot-5 RJ Quinañan, the Snackmasters managed to steady the ship and spoil the 18-point performance of Gabby Espinas.

In what could be his finest game so far, the lanky center did almost everything on the court, scoring, rebounding and hustling. But his one-man show in the fourth — he scored 10 points — went down the drain. He also grabbed 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.

Dela Peña and Concha tallied three 3-point shots each to finish with similar 17 points while Quiñahan and Eder Saldua also had identical 10 points.
