HSDPA - The Mobile Broadband

HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) refers to a new release in 3G telephony standards, which boosts downlink speeds from the current end-user rate of 384 kbps (up to 2 Mbps according to standards) to a maximum value according to standards of 14.4 Mbps. Real life end-user speeds will be in the range of 2 to 3 Mbps.

Downlink speed means that when you request information (like an audio file, video clip or data files), the data will download at tremendous speeds onto your cell phone, laptop or PDA.

HSDPA will make life easy for 3G customers, providing vastly better service for both corporate users and individuals, with data delivered at speeds comparable to or better than fixed-line broadband access systems.  Benefits:

-  Corporate users will have easy and secure mobile access to corporate networks, with rapid retrieval and downloading of confidential corporate information.

-  Consumers will enjoy superior quality for video services, including video streaming and gaming.

-  All customers will enjoy fast Web browsing, with rapid access to graphics-heavy Internet sites.

-  HSDPA also offers significantly improved indoor mobile service coverage, making 3G services fully available in large buildings, shopping centers, metros and other hard-to-cover areas.

HSDPA will bring to data what GSM provided for voice. The emergence of Internet protocol (IP) technology for wireless made possible by IMS will be key to success.  Average speeds usually apply to people which are in an unobstructed location, near a tower. This technology has the same problems as older cell phone technologies, where if you have a weaker signal to your phone, the speed will be lower. Network congestion can also be an issue for speed.

The user experience of data services in a mobile network depends not only on peak or average bit rates but also on system response times. There are many parts of the end-to-end delivery process in a mobile system that add delay; terminal processing power, inherent delay in the system and the response time from the application servers (if engaged) are the most important ones.

In HSDPA the delay is reduced by moving radio management functionality closer to the edge of the network. By allowing the radio base stations to perform scheduling of traffic instead of the Radio Network Controllers a more efficient transmission between the terminals and the network can be achieved. This is expected to reduce the delays through this part of the system.  The new features are fully backwards compatible with the earlier versions of WCDMA allowing for a co-existence of terminals with and without support for HSDPA.

HSDPA is the most cost-effective path to higher data rates and more efficient use of valuable spectrum. It enables operators to compete effectively in increasingly converged markets and satisfy the need for enhanced QoS and bandwidth-hungry services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  It will be the technology that will lead to the cost effective delivery of the most advanced data services and significantly improved network capacity.

HSDPA will drive 3G into the mass market soon, and that the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) will simultaneously make innovative services possible.
