Royal Cargo picks QAD Solutions

Royal Cargo, a logistics solutions provider, has reorganized and diversified to provide more value-added services by transforming several of its dry and cold storage plants into contract manufacturing facilities starting with the food business.  The company is utilizing QAD solutions to gain competitive edge, to become agile and profitable, and to be able to respond quickly to the ever-changing market conditions as it jumpstarts its one-stop food processing hub business.

The Company is focused on its new line of business, hence outsourcing several of its processes including the development and implementation of its software application program for its production planning, execution and costing activities.  This service is being provided by Information Managers, Inc. (INFOMAN), the Philippine sole distributor of QAD MFG/PRO solutions, who set the record by having the system up and running for Royal Cargo’s Food Processing Division in four months’ time.

Mobius Online Offers Online Prepaid Payment
Game publisher Digital Media Exchange has expanded its online payment gateway, MobiusOnline, to allow for purchasing other game and non-game related prepaid cards issued by Globe, Globelines, Smart Telecommunications, PLDT Vibe, Sun Cellular, Infocom, Level-Up! and others.

DME President Jojo Añonuevo said the company would be expanding the MobiusOnline service, eventually including other retail firms and merchants in the food and beverage business. Current MobiusOnline partners include PinoyDVD.com, GreenArcher.net, Atenista.net, Peyups.com, USTexchange.com, and PinoyExchange.com.

Toshiba Launches First HD-DVD Player
Toshiba started the Japanese rollout of the world's first commercially available HD DVD player - HD-XA1,  the first player to support the HD DVD format approved by the DVD Forum, the international association that defines and promotes DVD standards.

Toshiba's HD-XA1 supports playback of pre-recorded HD DVD. Sound is also enhanced. Along with L-PCM 5.1ch audio, HD-XA1 supports the clarity and realism of three next generation surround-sound formats, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, and sound sources can be output to audio systems via the player's HDMI output or multi-channel audio output. Support for up-conversion of standard DVD to a resolution of 1080i or 720p through HDCP capable HDMI output allows consumers to enjoy current DVD libraries with output resolution scaled to their HDTV or HD displays.

Skype Founders Sued for .1 Billion
StreamCast Networks has sued Skype, co-founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom for violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). StreamCast, makers of the Morpheus peer-to-peer file swapping software.

The complaint claims that the technology used in Skype is the same as the FastTrack technology used in Morpheus and Kazaa, and that it had the right of first refusal to purchase the technology, and is seeking .1B in damages.

Fake BBC Site Infects Computers
Attackers have begun spamming e-mail lures in an attempt to attract users to infected websites. These e-mail messages contain excerpts from actual BBC news stories and offer a link to "Read More". Users who follow this link are taken to a website that is a spoofed copy of the BBC news story from the e-mail. This website exploits the unpatched createTextRange vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer and is currently being used to download and install a keylogger. This keylogger monitors activity on various financial websites and uploads captured information back to the attacker.

While a number of security firms have released unauthorized patches for the vulnerability, Microsoft advices users to switch off Active Scripting in order to protect themselves while the official patch is developed.

LG Sues Samsung For Wrong Advertisements
LG is suing rival South Korean electronics giant Samsung for slander over a series of advertisements which according to LG, makes false and defamatory claims about one of its top-of-the-range digital TV products.

LG maintains Samsung's ads were designed to disrupt sales of a plasma TV with a built-in hard disk drive and PVR functionality. Samsung is alleged to have said the product needed a noisy cooling system - which LG said it doesn't.  Another issue was the products lifespan - Samsung allegedly said it's only 20,000 hours, LG claimed its 50,000.00.

Singapore Unveils Biometric Passport
Singapore’s new biometric passport has been unveiled by Wong Kan Seng, deputy prime minister and the minister for Home Affairs at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Called "Biopass", the document contains a polycarbonate data page and includes a range of additional security features.

BioPass will comply with ICAO standards and will incorporate both facial and fingerprint features. The passport will be valid for five years.
