A taste of Singapore in Kopi Roti
spacer

By ANNALYN S. JUSAY

KOPI Tiams are traditional coffeeshops found in Singapore and Malaysia which may be considered the Southeast Asian equivalent of the more famous Western coffee chains. Here, people not only munch on delicious breakfast and snack offerings, they also exchange talk and gossip on a variety of topics as one would expect of a hang-out place.

Fortunately, you don’t have to travel so far to have an authentic taste of the specialties of the kopi tiam. With the opening of Kopi Roti, discriminating diners can sample an irresistible array of specialty breads, coffee and teas which taste exactly as they are found in Singapore’s famed hawkers’ stalls.

At Kopi Roti, breakfasts and snacks become a day-long obsession as it offers an array of high-quality breads and beverages that is an integral part of one of Asia’s most exciting cuisines. One of the main attractions is the Kopi Bun which has a luscious crust of caramelized coffee and a sweetish butter filling. When paired with the house’s own blend of Singaporean coffee or tea, the Kopi Bun makes for a complete meal in itself.

The other dishes on Kopi Roti’s sparse but carefully selected menu include the "Roti" French Toast and the homemade "Roti" Kaya Toast which is thinly sliced brown bread spread with butter and "Kaya" or pandan-colored coconut egg jam, Singapore’s own version of the Filipino matamis na bao. These toasts are often accompanied by two pieces of soft-boiled eggs in special soya sauce.

Charming owner Julie Tecson says coffee and tea lovers will certainly discover a new way of drinking their favorite beverages at Kopi Roti. Coffee here is brewed the traditional Singaporean way with the ground coffee beans passed through a sieve in boiling water then worked up with a native wood stirrer. And if you happen to watch the server in the open counter, it is a delight seeing him fastly transferring tea from one mug to another in order to create the froth needed in the making of Tea Tarik, a tea of Indian origin which is mixed with milk.

Kopi tiam regulars are familiar with the unique way in which the beverages are called, and this is the same with Kopi Roti. For instance, when we say Kopi C or Tea C, it means coffee or tea with evaporated milk. Kopi O or Tea O, on the other hand, means black coffee or plain tea only.

Other "must-tries" in Kopi Roti are their cold drinks, especially their Home Made Iced Tea and the Home Made Barley which is recommended for health buffs.

And just when you think there is a price to pay for the quality of its culinary offerings, particularly the freshness of its breads, Kopi Roti’s to-die-for specialties are surprisingly easy on the budget. Its combination meals are priced from as low as R70 (for one Kopi Bun and Kopi or Tea) to a high of R115 (for two pieces "roti" French Toast, two pieces soft-boiled eggs and Kopi or Tea.)

In less than one year, Kopi Roti (414-1754) has opened six outlets in Tomas Morato and Blue Ridge, Katipunan in Quezon City, NAIA Terminal 1 Arrival and Departure Areas and soon to open in SM Mall of Asia.
