Nissan sticks to CKD assembly here

While most local car companies gradually abandoned completely knocked down assembly operations by importing completely built-up vehicles from Thailand, the Nissan Motor Group in the Philippines has launched a five-year program that calls for the CKD assembly of eight car models in the country.
This was bared by Universal Motors Corp. (UMC) vice-president Elizabeth H. Lee at the 2nd Manila International Motor Show.
The Nissan Group in the Philippines is represented by UMC and Nissan Motor Philippines Inc. (NMPI). UMC is the exclusive distributor and assembler of Nissan commercial vehicles while NMPI concentrates on some Nissan vehicles and its passenger car model.
"New and additional model line-ups for the benefit of the Philippine market will be introduced as part of Nissan’s Leading Competitive Countries strategy," she said as Nissan adopts a more efficient sourcing strategy in ASEAN and globally to maximize growth opportunities and minimize costs as the Nissan business activities grow.
Lee said that UMC and NMPI will have four each new CKD models here for a total of eight CKD assemblies by 2010.
