Some of the perkiest sneakers on the planet

by yonina chan

UNDER the more appropriate and fashionable Sports Heritage banner, the adicolor line is back in full swing.

Of course, the techniques today for sneaker customization, especially in urban areas, reflect the skateboard and graffiti culture more than most other movements, and, interestingly enough, seem to hail back to the decade of the original Adicolor shoes. This time, the details are either far more intricate, or on the reverse, are far cleaner and far bolder in design and statement. It is about edgy, in-your-face designs that speak to an urban audience, incorporating the pop culture and the art of a generation that had shaken, stirred and blended together everything from the Muppets to Punk Rock to NBA to Andy Warhol to Hello Kitty and everything in between.

Betty Boop. Created by legendary animator Max Flescher during the Depression era, Betty Boop has become a global icon of sexiness, sassiness, and femininity. On the shoes, Betty Boop appears amongst a pattern of kiss, and on the jacket, made to resemble a racing jacket, complete with the black checks pattern on the lower quarter, a teasing Boop appear on the left pocket, kiss marks on the inside and the words Boop-oop-a-doop on the back.

Pucci. Fashion designer Emilio Pucci is known as the Prince of Prints. Reflecting his bold prints with a modern, stark, elegant twist to suit sportswear sensibilities, shades of green and white crystal-cut pattern appear on the shoe, and in a geometric floral design on the track suit, both with touches of fuchsia. These prints reflect the prints from the Spring 2006 Show collection, varying the shades, dimensions and little details to adapt to the item and garment.

Fafi. Representing the French street style of Toulouse which hails from a strong background of graffiti and street art, large-scale painter Fafi exemplifies this in a very feminine light, using her distinct art style and characters on the thigh length top and on the Adicolor HI.

Miss Piggy. Following Kermit, Muppet superstar and all-around hot-head Miss Piggy lends her image to the shoes and apparel of the Pink Series. Not quite the femme fatale she tries so hard to project herself to be, Miss Piggy’s designs draw on a more childlike sensibility.

Keith Haring and Jeremy Scott. Fashion designer Jeremy Scott collaborated with Adicolor on producing shoes and apparel based on Keith Haring’s creations. "Some of the things that had the idea of a repeat quality were interesting to me because they seemed like an all-over surface," Jeremy explains. "And a lot of Keith’s work has that feeling, it kinda takes over whatever surface and manipulates it to become one whole, final piece." Keith Haring’s style is based on the primacy of line, and his work which reflect social messages represents more than graffiti art, but a whole, complex mix of primitive impulses, automatic writing, pop culture, and "high" and "low" art.
