President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday greeted Muslims on the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Allaihi Wassalam, wishing its celebration brings greater joy, peace, and prosperity for Muslims and Christians.
Called Maulidin Nabi, the Islam prophet’s birthday came as Christendom began its solemn observance of the Holy Week.
In her message through the Office on Muslim Affairs (OMA) headed by Sultan Yahya Tomawis, executive director, the President noted the occasion’s timeliness and relevance with the government focusing on strengthening the citizenry’s moral fiber.
"The life of Prophet Muhammad is worthy of emulation, particularly as it relates to the virtues of personal humility, probity, and peace advocacy," she said. "I urge our people, both Muslims and Christians, to continue participating in the efforts to improve our country."
Tomawis said: "Prophet Muhammad’s eternal message for brotherhood among humankind is the cornerstone of tolerance, unity, and peace. More than ever, Muslims of whatever nationality reaffirm their sense of responsibility and commitment to lead a life based on the Glorious Qur’an and the Sunnah (Traditions) of the prophet."
Muslims in this critical period have to strengthen their link with the world Islamic community as a show of unity and strong faith in Allah, added Tomawis.
OMA Director Metalicop Domado said the office will hold tomorrow, Tuesday, an austere celebration in honor of the prophet.
Prof. Taha Basman, president of the Center for Moderate Muslims (CMM), said, "Since the prophet was sent for all mankind, his values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and moderation must be emulated and put to practice by all. His simple formula is what we need now to surmount the many crises confronting man."
Counselor Mehdi Rokni, cultural attaché of the Iranian embassy, congratulated Muslims around the world, particularly Filipinos, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
"I do hope Muslims all over the globe could recognize well the value of being Muslims and struggle to save themselves from satanic egos with the ultimate acceptance of God’s covenant," Rokni said as he quoted the Qur’an: "And hold fast by the covenant of Allah altogether and be not disunited…." (Chapter AlImran: 103)
Rokni will lead the embassy on April 14 in a lecture series, film showing of The Message (about the prophet), and dinner at the Green Mosque of the Islamic Center, Quiapo, Manila.
