By SEL BAYSA

Ambassador to Brunei Virginia Benavidez has reiterated the Department of Foreign Affairs’ (DFA) warning to Filipinas "to be more careful when applying for overseas jobs and not to fall prey to empty promises of illegal recruiters."

She aired the reminder following the successful rescue of eight Filipinas who were reportedly victims of human trafficking in Labuan, Malaysia.

Benavidez said representatives of the Philippine Embassy in Brunei helped them when they arrived at the Serasa Ferry Terminal in Muara, Brunei, in two groups last month.

Those rescued were temporarily housed at the embassy’s Filipino Workers’ Resource Center (FWRC) while their money and belongings are being retrieved from their recruiters, whose identities are being withheld pending their arrest.

Meanwhile, another Filipina victim of human trafficking in Labuan escaped with the help of Filipino seamen and members of a Christian group.

The rescued women vowed to expose to authorities the illegal operations of the human traffickers. (Sel A. Baysa)
