Manila (DPA) - Two communist rebels were killed and two others captured in separate clashes with government security forces over the weekend, an army spokesman said Monday.
A female guerrilla was killed in a clash in Bulan town in Sorsogon province, 375 kms south of Manila, on Sunday, according to Major Bartolome Bacarro.
Bacarro said troops recovered a rifle, a hand grenade and subversive documents from the area after the fighting.
In Bukidnon province, 825 kms south of Manila, another insurgent was killed when army soldiers and policemen stormed a suspected rebel lair in Talacag town on Saturday.
Bacarro said two rebels were also captured in the fighting, while two army soldiers were slightly wounded.
Troops recovered an M-16 rifle, two 45-calibre pistols and two handheld radios from the hideout, he added.
Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
In August 2004, Netherlands-based guerrilla leaders withdrew from peace talks with the Philippine government, triggering an escalation of hostilities between the rebels and government security forces.
