Paying tribute to the 2006 graduates

By TRISH VEGA

As one of the largest high schools in the world, Rizal High School has a lot of stories to share about students and their mothers. Some of the stories are reflected in Vaseline Shampoo’s Larawan ng Pasasalamat, part of its Glowing Inside campaign tribute to mothers. A celebration of the multiple facets of a mother-child relationship, this larger-than-life mosaic consists of pictures of the graduating class of Rizal High School students with their mothers at a very heart-warming ceremony on the school grounds. The graduates also wrote about the gratitude they felt for their supportive mothers. And among the hundreds of special messages shared, Vaseline Shampoo picked three of the most heartwarming and honest letters, and honored these graduates and their mothers during the ceremony.

For these graduates, taking part in the campaign gave them the opportunity to voice out their feelings for the mothers. "Gusto ko lang po ipaalam sa lahat ng tao na ipinagmamalaki ko ang nanay ko," says Joshua Saliba, whose mother is hearing and speech impaired. The love shared by this remarkable mother and son goes beyond words, and while they communicate with sign language, Saliba says his mother knows exactly how he feels just by looking at him, and vice versa. "Pinapadama niya po sa akin ang kanyang pagmamahal at suportsa," he adds.

moments of Rizal High School students and
their mothers.
Prior to the event, Hannibal Ramirez’s teachers would not have thought he shared a loving relationship with his mother since he was the typical rowdy boy who often got into scrapes and arguments. But his thank-you letter said otherwise. "Nagkakaintindihan kami ng nanay ko. Alam ko po na pinapagilitan niya ako dahil gusto niyang lumaki akong mabuting tao," shares Ramirez, who surprised his classmates by being sweet and attentive to his mom.

Maria Angela Paula Ureca, on the other hand, admires the steadfast strength of her mother, who singlehandedly raised Ureca and her siblings. As the youngest child, Ureca was often shielded from family problems by her mother, who did not want her daughter to know that she was having difficulty making ends meet. "Ngayong malaki na ako, hindi na kailangan itago ng nanay ko kung may problema. Nalulungkot po ko pag malungkot siya, at gusto ko siyang tulungan sa abot ng aking makakakaya," says Ureca, adding that the Vaseline Glowing inside campaign gave her the courage to talk to her mom about this issue.

These graduates and their mothers were serenaded by Nikki Gil, who performed the touching Vaseline Glowing Inside anthem composed by Louie Ocampo and written by Edith Gallardo. Nikki was accompanied by both her parents. Her dad Dino graduated class valedictorian of Rizal High School in 1979.
