Hapee-PCU scuttles Magnolia

IT TOOK five games and an extra five minutes before Harbour Centre finally scored its first win yesterday. But it was worth waiting.

Drawing big games from Joseph Yeo and Robert Reyes, the Port Masters outlasted Granny Goose Tortillos in a thrilling battle down the stretch for an 84-81 overtime win in the 2006 PBL Unity Cup at the Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque.

Facing the prospect of another meltdown, Yeo rose to the occasion, knocking in a huge three-point shot that put them on top for good, 82-81, with less than 20 ticks left.

Hapee-Philippine Chistian University posted the first blow out win in the tournament by crushing Magnolia Ice Cream, 77-63, in the second game.

Bucking the absence of coach Junel Baculi, the Teethmasters came through with an avalanche of baskets early in the final quarter to turn a close and entertaining contest into a rout.

With the win, the Teethmasters, handled by veteran Jun Noel, improved to 2-3, the same records of the Spinners and Snackmasters.

Yeo’s trey was enough to atone himself after flubbing two crucial free throws in the waning moments in the regulation. He finished with a conference-high 27 points following an impressive 3-of-7 shooting from the three-point area.

He also had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in 35 minutes of action in what could be his finest performance so far in the season-ending tournament. His awesome show also made up for the distressing performance of LA Tenorio who was held scoreless in 20 minutes of play.

While Yeo repeatedly shattered Tortillos’ defense with his wide array of moves, the 6-foot-7 Reyes was a tower of power in the shaded lane, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. His power inside plays was strong felt in overtime where he scattered four points and helped foil several Tortillos’ plays.
