FIL-AMERICAN DENISE Dy was invited by the International Tennis Federation to join an eight-week tour of Europe as a member of the ITF 18-Under International Junior Team.
The trip, which will be sponsored by the Grand Slam Development Fund, will run from May 15 to July 9.
The tour will start in Italy with the 26th International Junior "Citta Di Santa Croce" in Santa Croce (May 15-21) and the 47th Trofeo Bonfiglio Campionati Internazional D’Italia in Milan (May 22-28). Next will be the 42nd Astrid Bowl in Charleroi, Belgium (May 29 — June 3) to be followed by the Roland Garros in Paris, France (June 4-11).
From France, the tour will proceed to Great Britain for the 14th International Junior Tournament in Offenbach (June 13-18), Eastbourne Training (June 19 — 23), LTA International Junior Championships in Roehampton (June 25 — 30) and the Junior Championships in Wimbledon (July 1-9).
One of the main reasons for forming the ITF 18-Under team is to assist players from less developed tennis nations to make an impact internationally, which will in turn generate interest in the sport in their own countries.
Dy, who will turn 17 next month, has improved her ranking to a career-best of No. 42 in the ITF World Juniors this week after a semifinal finish in the Genting ITF Juniors in Malaysia and two quarterfinal appearances in the Bangkok ITF and the Mitsubishi International Juniors in Manila. She has joined seven tournaments since January this year.
The US-born Dy, whose parents are both Filipino citizens, left for Korea last Saturday to compete in the Asian Closed Junior Championships in Jeju Island. After that, she will lead the RP campaign in the Federation Cup which will be held from April 17- 23 in Seoul. Other members of the squad are Noelle Conchita Zoleta and Czarina Mae Arevalo.
Last year, Dy won the singles and doubles titles in the ITF Thailand Open and was singles champion in the Enervon-Futures International Juniors held in Manila. She also won the doubles in the Phinma-Futures International Juniors, ITF India Juniors in Calcutta and Taca Group Bowl in El Salvador.
Dy, ranked No. 6 in the Asian Tennis Federation girls division, teamed up with fellow Fil-Am Riza Zalameda to win the doubles title in the ,000 Holcim Women’s Circuit. Both players debuted in the Manila SEA Games.
