REJAN LEE and Terence Tang punctured the hoop with impunity Saturday as Mighty Filter Kings demolished Goldstar, 7263, and clinched the Amateur Basketball Association (ABA) title at the Buddhacare gym in Queazon City.
Frustrated in their first two attempts to win the title, the Caesar Wongchuking-mentored squad started a well-oiled machine, coming through with several spurts initiated by Lee and Tang to take control of the game early.
"I’m just glad they responded to my instructions. Finally, we won the tournament after finishing runner-up twice," beamed Wongchuking, who was assisted by former UP mentor Lito Vergara. "I just hope this will just be the start of something good for the team."
Actually, it was a sweet revenge for the Mighty Filter Kings after absorbing a stinging defeat to Goldstar in the elims.
After a torrid exchange of baskets early on, the Mighty Filter Kings posted several 11-point margin in the third as Sam Gulayan and veteran Dominic Uy imposed their will inside the paint while Lee, Terence Tang and Geo broke Goldstar’s defense time and again with their torrid outside shooting.
The high-leaping Lee, who is aspiring to play in the UAAP, led the Jo Whang-managed Mighty Filter Kings’ bristling assault with 16 points while Tang, brother of La Salle star, TY Tang, chipped in 15 which he highlighted with a putback that drew wild applause from the crowd.
Uy and Gulayan, the team’s twin goliaths, combined for 21 points while Geo Sia, Royd Tan and Jean Alabanza contributed three points or more. The hustle and energy also provided by Lee, Alabanza and Sia also helped the team defuse their rival’s late surge.
"No doubt about it, everybody contributed to our cause. Our pressing defense also contributed a lot," said Wongchuking who was again delighted by Uy’s inspired performance.
Uy was later named as the tournament MVP while Tang emerged as the Finals MVP. Sia and Uy were also named in the Mythical 5 selection.
