Fun dining at Bubble Gang Toppings
spacer

BY ANTONETTE VALDEZ–PUA

After getting a dose of laughter from GMA–7’s "Bubble Gang" on a Friday evening, expect loyal viewers of the mentioned gag show to troop to the favorite hangout of their favorite group of comedians: Bubble Gang Toppings.

Located on the 2nd floor of the FBR building, which is right across Ateneo de Manila on Katipunan, Quezon City, Bubble Gang Toppings is a favorite of students in nearby schools because it offers a wide array of mouth–watering food toppings that come at low prices and big servings--big enough to guarantee them a fun dining experience.

"When our show reached its 10th year, we all thought of coming up with a place like this. Many of us have put up our own businesses so we thought putting up one which we could all share in would be a great idea. Besides, we wanted to give back something to the fans of ‘Bubble Gang’ and most of them are basically students. We had them in mind when we had this place put up," said the president of Bubble Gang Toppings who is no other than singer and songwriter Ogie Alcasid.

Since students are frequent diners at Bubble Gang Toppings, Ogie and his business partners Michael V., Rufa Mae Quinto, Ara Mina, Wendell Ramos, Anton Aquitana and Boi 2 Quizon, made sure they dropped the prices on their menu to make it affordable to youngsters who only rely on their parents for their daily allowance.

For as low as P65, one can already enjoy a big bowl of July’s Gulay Thai (vegetable toppings) or Boy 2–yo with Rice (tuyo rice toppings). An additional P30 can promise an unforgettable gustatory journey with Bubble Gang Toppings bestsellers, namely, Ogie’s Toci and Tapang Taal, which you can have for P95.

"Everything in our menu is affordable because that’s how we want it to be. Our customers’ satisfaction comes first before the business aspect. As a matter of fact, many people have shown interest in getting a franchise of Bubble Gang Toppings but we’re not open to it," Ogie explained.

Opposite the price list in the menu of Bubble Gang Toppings are funny and out–of–this–world names of the food items which "Bubble Gang" head writer Ceasar Cosme and writer/comedian Michael V are responsible for. You’ll find under the Pinoy Toppings section Salbaheng Salpicao (beef salpicao) which costs P125 a bowl; Adobo–dobo–doo (adobo flakes), P95; Sexbol’s Longga (longganisa toppings), P95; Electro bagnetic (bagnet), P115; Ara’s Arroz (Arroz Ala Cubana), P95; and "Sisig" La Ka with Rice which can be cooked as Sisig Oink–Oink (pork sisig) or Sisig Tilaok (chicken sisig). Both are priced at P95.

Among the Asian Toppings you can choose from are Korean "beef" Novela (Korean Beef) which costs P125 per bowl; Anak ng Tinapa Rice (Tinapa Rice), P75; Anton–Katsu (Tonkatsu), P95; Wendell’s Meatballs, which can be served in sweet and sour sauce or in fish variety for only P95; and Michael V’steak (bistek), P95.

"We try as much as possible not to feed anything that’s too fatty but we definitely don’t cater to those who are doing the South Beach Diet. We have consultants who teach culinary arts and are liked by the whole group. Some of the items on our menu are suggestions from our customers," shared Ogie.

One’s palate often craves for something sweet after a heavy meal. Aware of this, Bubble Gang Toppings offers a wide variety of ice cream flavors that you can choose from, such as Sahara "Dessert" Para Maging Sweet Ka, after feasting on a bowl of toppings.

Aside from having students most of the time and families on weekends, the purpose of the friendly hues of red, blue, yellow and orange splashed on the walls and furnishings of Bubble Gang Toppings is for the nightly gimmicks that happen as soon as the sun sets and the moon shows in the sky.
