Use strong faith in God to know the truth – GMA
spacer

By FERDIE J. MAGLALANG

President Arroyo yesterday called on all Filipinos to use their "strong faith" in God in discerning the truth from falsehood, especially against those trying to deceive and sow disunity among the people.

The President made the call at the end of the two-day spiritual retreat she had with her Cabinet members at the Presidential Mansion in Baguio City, where she also called on the Christian nation to reflect on the sufferings of Jesus on the cross.

"Let us use our strong faith in God to separate the truth from false promises, sincere goals from gimmickry, and real reconciliation from actions that intend to divide our nation," Arroyo said in the vernacular in her Lenten Message to the Nation yesterday.

Mrs. Arroyo took time out from her hectic schedule in Manila where calls for her immediate ouster from office have become frequent due to her alleged failure to come clean on accusations she had cheated her way to her electoral victory in the May 10, 2004 presidential elections.

Although her allies in Congress have dismissed all these charges against her in an impeachment proceeding that was concluded on a mere technicality, she has been beset with military coup attempts and street protest actions demanding her to step down.

In her brief message, the Chief Executive also said that only a peaceful revolution, not an armed uprising, would succeed in liberating the country.

"People during His time thought that Jesus would lead an armed revolution to free his country. But instead, he offered a peaceful alternative centered on the real essence of freedom — love," she said.

Mrs. Arroyo also called on the people to unite and reconcile with God for the good of the country, stressing that all Filipinos should reflect on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ during the Holy Week and remember his most important teaching on love.

Today, Maundy Thursday, she, along with her spouse, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, and the rest of the members of the First Family, will visit churches for the traditional "Visita Iglesia" in Baguio City. She will return to Manila on Monday.
