This year’s Playshop promises to be more interesting and exciting as the country’s favorite summer hangout adds new workshops to its lineup—acting master class, creative explorers class, modeling for kids, and basic cheerdancing.
Filipinos’ love for cheerdance is evident in the huge turnout of crowds during the annual University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance competition. The crowd is bigger and more spirited on cheerdance day. Though competition is intense, students take pride that school spirit is at its peak during this time.
With the popularity of cheerdance among teens and young adults, Playshop saw the dance’s capacity to improve a person’s self-confidence and self-expression. They saw it as an alternative to traditional forms of art that not everybody can do. "A lot of young people are captivated by the images and choreography they see on TV and they aspire to become cheerleaders themselves. We’ve been getting many calls—questions, suggestions for Playshop to offer cheerdance lessons. Cheerdance has evolved from mere pyramids and high kicks to a higher form of self-expression that requires high levels of creativity and endurance. And Playshop is ready to offer that training," said workshop head Lani Ligot.
Former members and choreographers of the UP PEP Squad Sherwin Casepe and Love Sabio will handle the class, which is open for 13-year-olds and above. Trumpets is the only theater group that offers basic cheerdance apart from its traditional offerings in theater, voice and dance.
After the success of its modeling for teens workshops, Playshop now offers modeling for kids to children 4 to 10 years old. This class seeks to develop at an early age children who have ‘presence’ in front of the camera but can’t sing, dance or act.
This summer, Playshop also offers a class for children with special needs. Called "creative explorers," this music and theater appreciation class seeks to enhance the social skills and ultimately, the social life, of such children while also honing their artistic potentials.
The creative explorers class, to be handled by special education (SPED) teachers Naomi Tabanao and Rizza Ribbo, is open to children aged 6 to 12 years old.
The acting master class under Roselyn Perez is for actors and advanced students (professionals in the field) who need to brush up on their acting technique and stage performance.
Trumpets Playshop, the country’s top multimedia summer workshop of choice is back and even better with a new workshop venue at Learning Links in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, apart from regular venues at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall and Alabang Town Center. Enrollment is ongoing. For details, call 6362842 or 6354478.
