Navotas pushes new garbage program
spacer

By ED MAHILUM

The municipality of Navotas announced yesterday that it will intensify its door-to-door garbage collection as part of its "Kilos Kalinisan’’ program aimed at maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Authorities also said that the intensified garbage collection coincides with Earth Day celebration.

Apart from the regular garbage collection, which is usually undertaken by green garbage trucks, narrow alleys will also be part of the campaign.

A mini-collection equipment will be manned by members of "Kalat Busters" and the "Barangay Eco-Boys,’’ the operating arm of the Environmental Sanitation Office (ESO) of Navotas.

Mayor Toby Tiangco ordered the implementation of the "no-segregation, no collection’’ policy to promote responsible garbage management and disposal in the municipality.

Tiangco said that the program is in line with RA 9003, (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001) which requires households and commercial and business establishments to segregate biodegradable and nonbiodegradable wastes, which will be collected on a regular basis.

The 500-man street sweepers have also been intensified to keep major streets free of garbage.

Tiangco cited the "Kilos Kalinisan" program, which is being undertaken barangay-wide.

"This program is an indicator of our concern for order, for the health of our residents and for the good of the environment. I hope my fellow Navoteños will cooperate and do their share in maintaining a clean and green Navotas,’’ Tiangco said.

Navotas has been chosen for three years (2001, 2003, and 2004), by the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran (GPK), as the cleanest and greenest municipality in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The municipality has released the schedules of the door-to-door garbage collection. From MondayWednesday-Friday District-1 and Barangay Tanza (6-8 a.m.) biodegradable; Tuesday-ThursdaySaturday District-2, (69 p.m.) biodegradable; and Sunday District-1, (6-8 a.m.) and District-2 (6-9 p.m.) non-biodegradable.

Penalties ranging from P200 to P2,500, cancellation of business permits, or an imprisonment up to six months, will be imposed against violators.
